BMW Motorrad unveils four new models

- INIGO S. ROCES

More than 700 riders gathered in Pampanga to witness the latest unveiling of BMW Motorrad, the motorcycle division of BMW. There four new models and an update to a current one were shown off to the crowd to cater to a variety of tastes and destinations.

R1250 GS

Easily drawing the most interest was the R1250 GS. Unveiled just a few months ago to the world in Milan, Italy, the R1250 GS is BMW’s most capable adventure motorcycle, designed for long rides both on and off-road.

The new 1250cc boxer engine has received a whole host of upgrades to increase its power, efficiency, and adaptability to a variety of conditions. It now produces 136-PS at 7,750 rpm over the previous 125-PS, and 143 Nm of torque at 6,250 rpm over the previous 125 Nm. This power is then delivered to the rear wheels via a driveshaft with a toothed chain (as opposed to its predecessor's roller chain).

The R1250 GS lights the way with a standard LED headlamp. It comes with two riding modes, with ASC and Hill Start Control as standard. It's also fitted with electronic suspension called the next generation of Dynamic ESA with fully automatic load compensation. All of this is displayed on the 6.5-inch full-colour TFT screen. Naturally, the R1250 also offers standard adjustability of seat height (except for the HP style).

The R1250 GS is offered in three variants: Style HP at P1,570,000; GS Exclusive at F-series GS

Besides its flagship adventure model, BMW also unveiled the F850 GS and F750 GS. These models are marketed to those looking for a lighter and more agile motorcycle. Like the R1250, the F750 and F850 also sport 50-80cc larger engines from the previous 700 and 800cc respectively. Their engines, by contrast, are arranged in a parallel twin fashion. The F750 produces 78 Ps and 83 Nm. The F850 produces 95-PS at 8,250 rpm, and 92 Nm at 6,250 rpm. Both deliver power to the rear wheels via a chain drive.

Like the R's the F's sport new LED daytime running lamps, new full-color TFT screens, and riding modes. The F850 GS edges out its little brother with the addition of Dynamic ESA suspension control.

The F GS twins are both offered in Standard and Sport variants. Unfortunately, BMW Motorrad Philippines has yet to release pricing and delivery date of the two models.

C 400 X

For those that prefer adventures on paved roads, BMW Motorrad hopes to make itself more accessible to more riders with the addition of its latest model, the C 400 X. The new scooter hopes to compete in the growing and lucrative midsize touring scooter segment. The C 400 has a distinctive boxy design. It features an LED headlight with the same Y-shaped daytime running lamp as the R1250 GS.

Powering it is a 350cc liquid-cooled, single cylinder engine. It produces 34 PS at 7,500 rpm and 35 Nm at 6,000 rpm. It delivers power to the rear wheels via a CVT. Power delivery is governed by ABS and automatic stability control (ASC). It can travel up to a top speed of 140 km/h.

Under the seat is some incredibly large storage, capable of fitting two full face helmets. The main helmet compartment features as fold-out flexcase that provides additional luggage room for helmets, bags and anything else. There are also compartments in the leg shield, with one compartment specifically designed for smart phones, including an integrated power outlet.

Trip info is displayed on a large, full color TFT screen. This can be configured via the multi-controller on the left handlebar, similar to the GS models.

The new model will go on sale next year at P450,000 and will be positioned below its present scooter offerings, the C650 Sport and GT. BMW has not specified whether it will be deemed highway legal.

R NineT Option 719

Finally, fans of the R nineT were also given a Christmas treat with the new Option 719 packages. These are a line of parts made by the BMW Motorrad Spezial customization department to give the R NineT some added custom flair. Select models of the R NineT can be ordered pre-customized to truly stand out from the crowd.

The Option 719 versions are available for the R NineT Pure and R NineT Scrambler lines. They’re made up of the Mars Red and Black Pollux for the R NineT Pure, while the Scrambler gets the Black Vintage treatment. Naturally, they all sport the “Option 719” badge.

They’re offered at the following prices: P1,270,000 for the Pollux and Black Vintage, while the Mars Red is priced at P1,290,000.
