C for Change

Coleen Garcia makes a significant career decision even as she adapts to married life

- By REGINA MAE PARUNGAO

Almost a year since becoming a missus, Coleen Garcia continues to discover things about herself as wife and about her husband, Billy Crawford.

For instance, she now knows he is a good cook and likes vapes.

“We had just moved into our new house and we are beginning to understand the new responsibilities we have as husband and wife,” she said.

They have misunderstandings too like other couples. Coleen even noted that though she promised to never become a nagger, oh well.

“He’s hard-headed kasi!” she laughed, adding Billy is a risk-taker, which sometimes results to accidents. “I’m all for prevention so I always tell him he should be careful.”

She used to think a couple should not sleep on marital spat. Now she realizes that sometimes, before settling down their differences, “we need to cool down our heads first.”

“Sometimes I go to bed in a bad mood and he understands that. But after I get rest, it’s important that we communicate. We should be transparent about the problem. We should let it out because if we keep it to ourselves, we will eventually explode emotionally,” explained she, who is 10 years his junior.

Getting married in their swinging 30s has seemingly become a trend for celebrities but not Coleen. At 26, she doesn’t regret being Mrs. Crawford, despite some saying it was “too early.”

“My journey is different from others,” she noted.

Coming from a broken family, Coleen admitted she has held on dearly to the concept of “forever” with her relationships. It has always been her dream to have a family – “to have a second chance on that.”

“I felt that he (Billy) is really the one for me. We wanted to be together, we wanted to live together. And by getting married, I felt I was doing things right by him and by God.

“If you’re going to take it long, the problem becomes deeper, especially if it’s, like, problems of married couple. So, it becomes easy to just get up and leave. Billy and I are ready for that commitment – to really commit to each other,” she said.

When are we going to see their baby Crawford, we asked.

Coleen said they plan to have a baby three to four years from now. But of course, if God gives it to them earlier or later, then so be it.

“God’s plan is always the best,” she shared. “But for us, it’s best that it’s not yet now. We’re still taking time to adjust and we want to enjoy the experience of being husband and wife first.”

In the meantime, they will just practice their “parenting skills” on their puppies.

“We’ve decided to work on our dynamics, so when the times comes, we can already give 100 percent to our baby.”

Fresh start

It looks like Coleen doesn’t want to be “away” from Billy, even just for a bit.

The actress made a major career change recently by signing up with Viva Artist Agency – the same management her husband is in.

She made clear, though, that Billy is not the determining factor for her decision. The former “It’s Showtime” host was with Star Magic for seven years, and this transfer of hers is “okay” for them.

Being with Viva means Coleen is not an exclusive artist of any network. But though open to other opportunities, her heart remains Kapamilya.

“It’s (transfer) not something I just decided all of a sudden. As far as this chapter in my life goes, it’s because I wanted a fresh start,” she said. “Yes, Billy did give me advice. He told how it is like to be with Viva, the experience of working here. Let’s just say he helped me decide on this matter.”

She signed a five-year managerial contract with the agency, revealing 10 films are on the plate. First on the list is a rom-com movie with Edgar Allan Guzman.

Does she have limitations as actress being a married woman now, we asked. Well, Coleen wants to veer from the sexy roles she’d done before. It’s not because Billy “controls” her, but because she likes to explore her other capabilities as actress.

Still, she’s willing to do kissing and love scenes so long as it’s necessary in telling a story effectively.

“Like what I said before, I really want change. If it’s part of the story, then why would I refuse to do it? Of course, I will also ask Billy’s opinion about it because we really talk about everything. It’s my way of respect to him,” said she.

As for other projects, Coleen hopes to get hosting jobs and perhaps even work with Anne Curtis.

What about working with Billy? “We tried (working) before, and it’s really awkward and weird,” she laughed. “But then again, if the opportunities are there, why not? I’m willing to collaborate with anyone.”
