EDSA remains an ‘unfinished’ revolution – Bacani

- By LESLIE ANN G. AQUINO

EDSA People Power remains an “unfinished” revolution.

Retired Novaliches Bishop Teodoro Bacani stressed this Monday, noting that many Filipinos have reverted back to their self-centered ways after that historic moment in the country's history.

“We, especially our leaders, have reverted to our self-centered ways. We need a revolution of the heart that will make us truly say, God and country first before me and my family,” he said in an interview as the nation marks the 33rd anniversary of the peaceful revolution.

For his part, Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes lamented the tendency of Filipinos to have a short memory.

“February 25 must be remembered as one of the shining glory of our nation. I was one of those who joined the rejoicing crowd at EDSA when the dictator had to leave our country! The whole nation was aglow with joy! It is lamentable that Filipinos have short memories,” he said.

“The Spirit of EDSA has inspired other countries to empower people to remove tyrannical rule. EDSA is one of the great contributions that the Philippines gave to the world which loves justice and freedom!” added Bastes.

The Sorsogon prelate expressed hope that the generation of young Filipinos will understand the historical impact that the EDSA has exerted in the whole world with the first People Power that overthrew a hated dictatorship.

Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos, on the other hand, lamented how the commemoration of the EDSA People Power anniversary has turned into a concert event, a political gathering, and venue to air grievances.

“EDSA People Power happened because of God. He had shown His power, and it is His power to protect and to perform miracles. And there was no loss of life, no blood spilled. There was peace. We regained our freedom. It was because of God. It is so sad that God is set aside,” he said.

“No political party, not a particular person could credit for EDSA 1. Everything was of God, everybody is for God. God made use of all of us to be His instruments of peace, of change and renewal,” added Santos.

“Let us remember God, put God in our commemoration and in our lives,” he said.
