Gaming drives PC sales in PH
Gaming is now the fastest growing PC sales in the Philippines as more young people engaged in online gaming and even the education sector, which used to frown upon gaming as distraction to the academic pursuits, has now opened gaming courses, according to Acer Philippines.
“Gaming is the youngest unit in Acer Philippines and the fastest growing under Acer with 237 percent growth in 2018,” said Acer Philippines Sales and Marketing Director Sue Cashmere Ong-Lim on Tuesday at the “Next Frontier” press conference for the global PC maker.
Lim attributed the strong growth in the gaming PCs to the rise of esports in the Philippines that lured more sponsors to drive more players. In fact, international e-sports competitions are being held in the Asean region. Acer itself is proactively holding the Predator League in Asia Pacific. The third gaming competition next year will be held in Manila.
Gaming ACER computers account for 20 percent of the gaming market, making them the second largest, a marked improvement from its 6th rank in 2017.
Local demand has also been boosted by the education sector which now opened courses on games development. Previously, gaming was a taboo in schools as it is deemed a distraction to students’ academic pursuits.
“Gaming will definitely be the growth driver for ACER,” said Lim although the consumer segment still accounts for 60 percent of total followed by commercial with 30 percent and gaming with 10 percent.
