BORONGAN CITY, Eastern Samar – The Eastern Samar District Engineering Office (DEO) has completed 16 river landing projects in the upstream barangays in the towns of Can-avid, Dolores and Oras.

Manolo A. Rojas, DEO district engineer, told Manila Bulletin the river landing structures with a total cost of P40 million are convergence projects of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) funded by the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

The river landings were built in Barangays Malogo, Mabuhay, Camantang, Caghalong, and Baruk in Canavid; Cruz, San Pascual, Magsaysay, Denigpian, San Roque and Buenavista in Dolores and Cagdine, Gamot, Batang, Alang-alang and Cadian in Oras.

River landings are small ports built on river banks. “The completion of the projects will provide convenient and safe facilities to commuting public and easy transportation of goods and services to the mainland,” Rojas said.

DOTr-Maritime Sector project manager Julius Carlos said that the projects were mentioned by President Duterte in his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) as vital in the country’s interisland linkages.

“With the absence of a road network, the next best means of transportation especially in the island provinces is to use water transport. DOTr implements these development projects to give the people the privilege of a safe, convenient and affordable transport experience throughout the archipelago,” said Carlos.
