Eleazar orders more intel ops on cop involved in illegal drugs

- By AARON B. RECUENCO

Director Guillermo Eleazar, chief of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), has ordered all police commanders in Metro Manila to intensify intelligence-gathering against their men who are involved in illegal drugs activities.

At the same time, Eleazar urged the public to report to him any illegal activities of the policemen in their respective barangays for prompt action, saying the arrest of some erring policemen in the past days were the product of public’s trust to the police.

“I have tasked all the five district directors and the station commanders in Metro Manila to intensify intelligence monitoring and counter-intelligence to find out who among our personnel are involved in illegal drugs,” said Eleazar.

Eleazar’s order came after a policeman was arrested after being caught in video surveillance using shabu in Sampaloc, Manila last week.

It was recalled that in 2017, almost 200 policemen tested positive in the mandatory and surprise drug test conducted by the PNP to all its personnel.

The NCRPO was the second in terms of the highest number of policemen who tested positive in the drug test.

On the other hand, more than 400 policemen have been dismissed from the police service since 2016, mostly due to involvement to illegal drugs and extortion rackets.

“We are appealing to the public to help us in our internal cleansing by telling us, by reporting to us any illegal activities that they know involving our personnel,” said Eleazar.

The PNP has intensified its internal cleansing activities since 2017 after anti- narcotics policemen were involved in the kidnap-slay of a South Korean executive who was killed right inside Camp Crame.

More than 100 policemen were either arrested or killed by the Counter-Intelligence Task Force, the antiscalawag unit of the PNP, since its creation in 2017.
