LPA east of Mindanao could develop into tropical depression – PAGASA

- By ALEXANDRIA SAN JUAN

The low pressure area (LPA) east of Mindanao is expected to develop into a tropical depression before it enters the country this weekend.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather specialist Gener Quit-

long said the LPA may develop into a tropical depression within 24 to 36 hours and is expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) by Saturday or Sunday, based on its track.

It will be locally named "Chedeng," the third tropical cyclone to enter the country this year.

Quitlong added the weather disturbance might also make a landfall on the eastern part of Mindanao on Monday or Tuesday.

While the LPA has no direct effect on the country for now, its trough or extension will bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over the regions of Davao and SOCCSKSARGEN.

Cloudy skies with rain showers and isolated thunderstorms will prevail over the Cordillera Administrative Region, most parts of Cagayan Valley Region, Aurora, and Quezon due to the tail-end of the cold front, or the boundary where the cool and warm winds meet.

PAGASA advised residents in the area affected by the trough of LPA and tail-end of cold front on possible flash floods or landslides due to scattered light to moderate to at times heavy rains.

The northeast monsoon is also now affecting extreme northern Luzon particularly Batanes and Babuyan Group and is expected to bring cloudy skies with light rains in the area.

With the resurgence of the northeast monsoon (amihan), Quitlong said it might slightly lower the maximum temperature in Northern and Central Luzon.

The rest of Mindanao and of Central Luzon could experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

Partly cloudy skies will prevail over Metro Manila and the rest of the country.

Meanwhile, due to the surge of amihan, a gale warning was raised on the coasts of Batanes, Babuyan Group of Islands, Calayan, northern coast of Ilocos Norte, and northern coast of Cagayan.
