Sheryn Regis reveals winning battle against the Big C

- By KAREN VALEZA-TUNGOL

It’s been awhile since fans have seen Sheryn Regis active in the music and concert scene. Well, the Visayan singer revealed only recently that it’s because she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2016.

“I never revealed it until now. I was always covered, I didn’t show my scar,” Sheryn said in an interview.

The singer shared there weren’t even symptoms prior to the dis

covery of her illness. She admitted feeling scared especially when her immune system started getting compromised.

Thankfully, she has a new lease in life and she is back to doing what she loves — singing.

“Natakot din ako, s’yempre hanapbuhay ko ito. Ano kaya gagawin ko? Pero kapag dumating ka pala sa sitwasyon na iyon, pipiliin mo talaga ang life. Iisipin mo lagi na I’m thankful I’m still alive. Hindi mo na iisipin kung may boses ka ba or whatever, kun’di I’m just so thankful to be alive,” she said.

Having fully recovered from the Big C, Sheryn learned to value her life and family more. She also stays away from stress.

“I know now how to balance my life, not to be too stressed,” she said.

Sheryn is thankful that her voice wasn’t affected by the disease and that she can still reach high notes as before. She revealed singing “Come On In Out Of The Rain” and “Love On Top” upon recovery.

“Nu’ng kumanta ako, para akong laging may sharp. Kinukulot technique lang talaga. Alam naman ng production na hindi okay. Pero gusto ko lang talaga kumanta,” Sheryn said.

She’s grateful her daughter is by her side to give her strength in tough times. Sheryn raised her with Filipino values despite that she’s been living in the United States for many years now.

“She’s so sweet. Bisaya pa din siya. Sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Hindi ka

Amerikana, Pilipina ka.’”

Apart from having regular singing engagements in the US, Sheryn has fulfilled her dream of becoming a teacher. She works part-time as a preschool teacher.

“I’m strict but also very cool with the kids. They like me a lot. I have a teenager so I know how to handle them. When I was still on ‘(Search For The) Star In A Million,’ I got an offer to teach in an international school. International school or pag-aartista? Nag-artista ako,” she said.

When she was still active in the Philippines before migrating to US, Sheryn sung many ABS-CBN teleserye theme songs, including those for “Marina,” “Gulong Ng Palad,” “Prinsesa Ng Banyera,” “Kristala,” “Kampanerang Kuba,” and “Sana Maulit Muli.” She also did TV dramas, such as, “Love Spell” with Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson and “I Love Betty La Fea.”

Given the chance, Sheryn hopes to star on a teleserye while she’s in the country. Coco Martin’s “Ang Probinsyano” is also in her mind.

“Kahit saan. Actually, mahilig ako sa comedy, pero pwede din ako mag-drama. Gusto ko sila MayWard, gusto ko din makatrabaho ulit sila Bea Alonzo and Kim Chiu. They have grown so much talaga,” she said.

Now that she is back, Sheryn hopes to collaborate with Regine Velasquez and fellow “Star In A Million” finalist Erik Santos in concert. “Iba pa din ang Sheryn and Regine. Ate Regine, ako naman ang

susunod. We talk to each other. Actually, wala pa kaming back-to-back

ni Erik Santos. I look forward to that. I look forward to working with the icons like sila Sir Martin Nievera and Sir Gary Valenciano.”
