Iloilo set to become PH’s next major convention destination
ILOILO – The Department of Tourism (DOT) has launched a campaign to make Iloilo as the country’s next major destination for meetings, incentives, conferences/conventions, and exhibitions (MICE).
“Iloilo is primed to be the next convention center. Iloilo has proven itself an ideal site given its seamless infrastructure, wide highways and modern business parks,” said DOT Secretary Bernadette RomuloPuyat at Thursday’s launch.
The campaign, dubbed “Meet you in Iloilo”, highlights the marketing plan created by DOT and Iloilo MICE Alliance.
“What’s unique about Iloilo is not just the good food, but its rich history, heritage and culture that provide an enriching experience and adds value to the stay of delegates and participants,” added Puyat.
DOT Undersecretary Art Boncato Jr. noted how the Iloilo Convention Center has put Iloilo on the MICE map when it hosted the ministerial meetings for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 2015 and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2017.
Ilonggo Senator Franklin Drilon likewise underscored how MICE tourism can “open more opportunities for Iloilo to further boost its tourism, drive investments and create jobs.”
The positive domino effect of MICE tourism goes beyond Iloilo City.
“Positioning Iloilo City as MICE destination also benefits neighboring areas,” added lawyer Helen Catalbas, DOT’s Western Visayas regional director.
MICE delegates take side tours to towns of Iloilo province and even the island province of Guimaras, which has beaches and mountain resorts.
