Are your eggs really fresh?

- By PATRICIA BIANCA S. TACULAO

Eggs are a staple in any household because of its versatility to be transformed into different dishes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even snack time! Apart from its adaptability, the freshness of the product also adds flavor to every meal.

Buyers are meticulous toward eggs found in markets and groceries because no one can really tell the quality of an egg unless you crack one open.

To help with this dilemma, Alfred Jude M. Frac, the head of operations and business development of BR Optifarms Inc., shared some tips on how to determine if your eggs really are fresh on the inside as they are on the outside.

When buying eggs, Frac said that it’s best to first check for cracks or leakages that can cause spoilage. The quality of the eggshell should be hard, firm, and not watery. It’s best to avoid eggs that have water marks because wet eggs tend to spoil quickly.

His other suggestions include checking for foul odors coming from the eggs, or if there are any black spots on the shell.

If given the chance to crack open an egg, the telltale sign for freshness is the yolk. According to Frac, it must be whole and have no traces of other pigments inside.

While others may have their own techniques in telling the quality of an egg, Frac’s tips could help the consumers purchase fresh eggs for both their safety and satisfaction.
