Man with mental health problems shoots dead sleeping mother

A 30-year-old man who police said has mental health problems and is allegedly involved in using illegal drugs was arrested in Quezon City over the weekend after killing his mother who was sleeping with an improvised shotgun.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Gabriel, chief of Quezon City Police District's Talipapa Police Station (PS-3), said the suspect Francis Olivia, a resident of Sitio Mendez in Barangay Baesa is now under the custody of authoritie­s after he shot dead his mother Maria Olivia, 68.

Initial report from QCPD-Criminal Investigat­ion and Detection Unit (CIDU) showed that Maria was sleeping inside her room around 10:20 a.m., Thursday, when the incident happened.

Probers said Francis, armed with his improvised shotgun or "sumpak," entered his mother's room and suddenly shot the victim once which fatally hit her left chest.

Maria died on the spot while the suspect was left in shock.

Neighbors who heard the gunshot immediatel­y sought the help of authoritie­s who found the shotgun near the victim.

During questionin­g, investigat­ors said Francis admitted to the crime but said that he did not have any motive.

According to the police, the suspect, as well as his other family members, bared that he was using illegal drugs and have a mental health problem.

The suspect is currently detained at the QCPD Headquarte­rs in Camp Karingal while further investigat­ion is ongoing to shed light on the incident.
