3 weather systems to bring rains

- By ELLALYN DE VERA-RUIZ

Three weather systems are prevailing over the Philippines that would bring cloudy skies with scattered to light rains in some parts of the country Monday and Tuesday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

PAGASA weather specialist Loriedin dela Cruz said the trough or tail of a low pressure area (LPA) located outside the country’s area of responsibility is bringing cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms in Metro Manila, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Oriental Mindoro, and Occidental Mindoro.

Likewise, the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), which is a breeding ground for potential cyclone or LPA, will likely bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms in Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Dinagat Islands, Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, and Davao del Sur.

Dela Cruz said areas affected by the trough of the LPA and ITCZ should remain alert for possible flash floods over low-lying areas or landslides over mountainous regions during severe thunderstorms.

The northeast monsoon or “amihan” meanwhile continues to prevail over Northern Luzon, bringing cloudy skies with light rains in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Apayao, Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, and Quirino.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country will have fair weather Tuesday morning with chances of late afternoon or early evening rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA warned that the occurrence of severe thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening could possibly trigger flash floods or landslides.

Dela Cruz also pointed out that a gale warning remains in effect due to strong winds coming from the amihan.
