Rains this week due to TD ‘Ramon’

- By ELLALYN DE VERA-RUIZ

The low pressure area (LPA) off the coasts of Bicol and Eastern Visayas has developed into tropical depression “Ramon” on Tuesday morning.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) estimated the location of Ramon

at 830 kilometers (km) east-southeast of Virac, Catanduanes or 685 km east of Borongan, Eastern Samar around 10 a.m. Tuesday.

It has maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 70 kph, and moving relatively slow at 10 kph westward. It is forecast to further intensify into a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 62 kph to 88 kph by Wednesday or Thursday.

PAGASA weather specialist Robb Gile said Ramon may make landfall over the eastern section of Northern Luzon or Central Luzon by weekend. However, he said, PAGASA is not ruling out a possible change in track.

Light to moderate with occasional heavy rains may begin to affect Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Masbate, Sorsogon, Samar, Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, Romblon, Marinduque, and southern part of Quezon on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon or amihan could bring light rains in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Apayao, Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, and Zambales.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country may continue to experience fair weather in the morning with chances of rain showers due to thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening.

By Thursday, light to moderate occasional heavy rains may be experienced in Isabela, Quirino, northern portion of Aurora, Polillo Island, and Camarines Norte.

Meanwhile, Aklan, Capiz, Romblon, Marinduque, southern part of Quezon, Albay, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Masbate, and Sorsogon will likely experience light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains.

As Ramon moves closer to the country, tropical cyclone wind Signal No. 1 will be possibly raised over Eastern Samar and the eastern section of Northern Samar within Tuesday.

PAGASA advised seafarers and passengers that sea travel in these areas may be disrupted once Signal No. 1 is in effect.

Likewise, sea travel is risky, especially for small sea crafts, over the seaboards of Northern Luzon and the eastern seaboards of Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and Visayas due to rough seas.

By Wednesday morning, PAGASA said Ramon will be 350 km east of Borongan City, and by Thursday morning at 360 km east of Infanta, Quezon.

It will be 170 km east of Casiguran, Aurora by Friday morning, 135 km east of Casiguran by Saturday morning, and 70 km northeast of Casiguran by Sunday morning.

Tropical cyclone wind Signal No. 1 may be raised over Eastern Samar and the eastern section of Northern Samar on Tuesday.

Ramon is the second cyclone to enter the Philippine area of responsibility this month and the 18th this year. Should it make landfall, Ramon will be the first cyclone to do so in the past three months. The last cyclone to make landfall over the country was tropical storm Jenny, which hit Casiguran, Aurora on August 27.
