ELIMINATE FAT WITH ZERO EFFORT Yes, it’s possible with CoolSculpting

- DR. KAYCEE REYES

Fat—the word most people hate. While we all know that it is essential to the body for a number of reasons, unwanted fat is another story. Unfortunately, even if some of us watch our diet and exercise regularly, there is still that arm flab, tummy roll, or jiggly thighs that just won’t quit until now. If you have never heard of eliminating fat via fat freezing, read on.

If only one can remove stubborn fat in a zap, wouldn’t you want to try it? Well, Coolsculpting doesn’t exactly do it in a snap, but it’s close enough! It can eliminate stubborn fat effortlessly via a process called cryolipolysis or fat freezing.

Cryolipolysis comes from Greek root words cryo or cold, lipo or fat, and lysis or loosening. When fat is exposed to temperatures ranging from five to negative five degrees celsius, it freezes and causes apoptosis, which is a natural process of the body where cells die and get eliminated from the body—and in this case, those are targeted fat cells. Fat freezing was first discovered in the ’70s upon the observation of the loss of fat from children’s cheeks after sucking on ice or a popsicle (called popsicle panniculitis). Because of this, it was later observed that fat cells are more vulnerable to cold temperatures than skin cells.

Decades later, in 2007, the first cryolipolysis machine was produced. And two years later, in 2009, global pharmaceutical giant Allergan also introduced its own, calling it CoolSculpting. Since then, it has become the gold standard in non-invasive fat reduction procedures, becoming the first and only FDA-cleared dermal cooling device since 2010. Moreover, according to Allergan, their various CoolSculpting applicators make it possible to treat more areas in the body than any other noninvasive fat-reduction machine, allowing it to treat a total of nine areas (all FDA-cleared) that include the thighs, the abdomen and flank (or love handles), back fat, bra fat, upper arm, fat underneath the buttocks (or banana roll), and for the face, under the jawline, and under the chin.

On average, it takes 35 minutes per cycle, but may vary depending on the section being treated. Patients may initially feel their skin being pulled, while the area may also feel very cold as the applicator goes on the skin. This happens until the treated area becomes temporarily numb from the cold. Post treatment, the area may look bruised, swollen, or red but will eventually subside. Regardless

of minor side effects, there is no downtime and patients may resume to their regular activities. Effects are seen from one up to three months post treatment as the body allows the dead fat cells to be eliminated naturally. But while the fat cells that are removed do not grow again, the remaining ones may enlarge anyway if proper diet is not observed. This is why CoolSculpting is ideal for generally healthy individuals and they are within their weight range. So if you’re a pinch away from your ideal body goal, CoolSculpt might just be your answer.

As good as Coolsculpting sounds, it is still not suitable for everyone. Your physician will check if your age, body composition, weight, medical history, and current state of health would qualify for the procedure. Also, remember that Coolsculpting is not a substitute for permanent weight loss—in fact, no fat-reducing machine is. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is still the key to looking your best and keeping fat at bay.
