PAGASA monitoring new weather disturbance

- By ELLALYN DE VERA-RUIZ

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is monitoring a new low pressure area (LPA) east of the country, which could enter the country's area of responsibility by weekend.

PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja said the LPA was estimated 3,300 kilometers east of Mindanao or still outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Monday morning.

Estareja said the LPA can possibly develop into a tropical depression within 48 hours but it is still too far to adversely affect any part of the country.

Should this weather disturbance enter the PAR as a tropical cyclone, PAGASA will be giving it a local name ‘Tisoy.’

For now, Estareja said the northeast monsoon or “amihan” remains the prevailing weather system, particularly affecting Luzon, including Metro Manila.

For the next three days, the amihan will likely bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over eastern Luzon, and partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains over the rest of the region.

Estareja said the amihan may also bring cooler weather over Northern and Central Luzon, Bicol Region and Quezon province, as temperatures could drop one to two degrees lower than the average temperature, especially in the early morning.

Meanwhile, Visayas and Mindanao will likely experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers from localized thunderstorms in the next three days.

PAGASA advised residents in these areas of possible landslides or flashfloods during severe thunderstorms.
