Lufthansa Technik PH breaks ground on $40-M expansion

Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP), provider of aviation Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services, yesterday (November 27, 2019) broke ground for its US$40 million, 9,000 sq. m Hangar 1A to cater to more aircraft, including the Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger plane.

LTP is expanding its operations at its Manila site at the MacroAsia Special Economic Zone, Villamor Airbase, Pasay City with the surge of MRO demand in the region.

“Lufthansa Technik Philippines has always been the country’s forerunner in the MRO industry," Elmar Lutter, President and CEO of LTP, told reporters.

As part of its expansion, the company is also hiring 275 additional Filipino workers

"As we approach our 20th year, we showcase the Philippines as an aviation stronghold in Asia-Pacific. The company strongly believes in the ability of this country to be a hub for aviation services in the region. Proof of this is our expansion and continued commitment to the country.”

The new hangar will be an exact replica of its existing Hangar 1 currently servicing the aircraft of various airlines, such as Philippine Airlines, British Airways, Korean Air, Asiana Airlines and Saudi Arabian Airlines.

Established in 2000, LTP is a joint venture of Hamburgbased Lufthansa Technik AG and Philippines’ biggest aviation support service provider MacroAsia Corporation. LTP currently employs 3,300 Filipinos across key cities nationwide, including Clark, Cebu, Davao, Kalibo and Puerto Princesa.

The construction of Hangar 1A will mark the tenth bay in the MRO giant’s Manila site, which provides base and line maintenance to various commercial aircraft including Airbus A320, A330, A350, and A380, as well as Boeing B777.
