President Donald Trump

- FR. EMETERIO BARCELON, SJ <emeterio_barcelon@Yahoo.com>

President Donald Trump is a fascinating figure. You are either for him or against him. He is accused mainly of seeking his personal interests above those of the country. Of course he denies this. He is accused of asking Russia to help him in his election in 2016. And he has kept part of his dealings with Russia secret. There was a special investigator that was appointed for his connections with Russia. Three of his men were convicted of lying to the investigator so that they are now in jail. But other people swear by him.

He is also accused of white American supremacy bias. In a sense this bias is still true. There still exist in the US a small minority who discriminate against the black and brown peoples. This is just the fact. But that is democracy. Live and let live but you can have your own prejudices. Once upon a time the Anglo Saxon white Protestant Americans dominated the country but that is no longer true. In fact you hear so many surnames now sounding Hispanic or Italian. Of course there was also the Irish who migrated to the US during the Irish potato famine. The United States is now a big mixture. And it is to their credit that they have been able to absorb the different migrants into their community. There are the native Indians, who came first, then the English white pilgrims, then the Irish, then the Italians, then the Latinos.

All the while the blacks were imported as slaves but now enjoy as much freedom as anybody else. In a way it is amazing how the Blacks have risen in every sector of the economy particularly in politics.

President Trump is the accidental president. The pundits of America never expected him to win. But he did. He is quite a character and nobody can deny that he has done good things for the country. As I said he has mesmerized people who are for him whatever happens. They follow and swear by him with unbelievable loyalty. There also those who accuse him of putting his self interests above those of the country and the rule of law. He was accused of this in the 2016 elections and again in the preparations for the next election in 2020. He is almost surely going to be impeached by the House of Representatives but he will surely not be removed by the Senate. The framers of the US Constitution made it a political decision when it is an accusation against a sitting President. To be removed he must not only be accused of wrongdoing but this decision must be approved by two-thirds of the US Senate before he can be removed. Since President Trump’s Republicans hold the majority in the Senate, it is almost impossible for him to be removed. But then the accusations against him will have a lot of clout in the elections next November.

Watching US politics from afar is, as I said, fascinating. It seems that for President Trump, the truth is how he sees it. What others may think is lie, may be for him the truth. He will declare victory in every case. He also has a tendency to demonize his enemies and call them fakes. So here is a situation where his enemies will probably prove to the people that he committed crimes but he will not be removed by the Senate. This happens to be the Constitution of the US. It will be in the next elections that matters can be straightened out. It is to the wisdom of the framers of the US Constitution that the people are the ultimate judges of the position of the presidency.

In some way we have been affected by the wisdom of the framers of the US Constitution. We thank the Almighty for this wisdom and the gifts it has brought us.
