BAGUIO CITY -The city government here is pushing for the establishment of more home-based businesses as alternative sources of income for residents whose regular jobs were affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

In a resolution passed by the city council, the city’s councilors suggested that residents consider handicrafts, pastries, other forms of ready-to-eat prepared food and brews to get them by during the quarantine measures and even when the city transitions to the “new normal.”

To support their pitch, they likewise requested the regional offices of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI-CAR), Technical Education Skills and Development Authority (TESDACAR) and other technical-vocational institutions (TVIs) to offer trainings and workshops for interested residents.

Moreover, the aldermen urged concerned city government offices to promote and market the homemade goods and products of Baguio locals.

This was in response to the devastating effects of the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) on ordinary businesses and other sources of income of Baguio residents.

The councilors noted that, in these trying times, the industry and resiliency of local residents were vital tools in recovering from the crisis.

And in turn, the city government should do its part in providing avenues for the development of entrepreneurial skills, they added.

Earlier, the city government pushed for alternative learning systems that would be responsive to the current economic landscape reshaped by the global pandemic, which include entrepreneurship courses and technical-vocational studies.
