IF YOU’RE STRUGGLING WITH MATH, TIKTOK MIGHT BE THE ANSWER
16-year-old math wiz Alexis Loveraz has been called the TikTok Tutor after gaining millions of views with his short, online crash courses in math and chemistry
For better and for worse, students around the world have been attempting to get used to distance learning. They are using applications like Zoom, Google Classroom, and TikTok. Yes, TikTok, the social networking app filled with less-than-a-minutelong dance tutorials, pranks, and general meme-worthy content, can also be used to learn about geometry, algebra, and chemistry.
Alexis Loveraz, a 16-year-old from the Bronx in New York, has over half a million followers by posting crash courses in mathematics, chemistry, and other high school subjects and SAT prep questions. The teen math wiz currently attends Harlem Prep Charter School and has a 4.0 GPA.
“I was, like, really shocked,” Alexis told American news channel CBS2 in an interview. “Things that they [students] probably forgot like before Covid-19. This is like a refresher of what I’m, like, giving them out. It’s really cool because they understand it even better the way I’m explaining it to them.”
“[My videos] reach places like United States, Canada, Australia, the Philippines, Singapore,” he added, astonished with the reach of his videos that he thought would just reach teenagers around his area.
“I just learned more in 30 secs than I do in an hour and a half,” wrote one user on Alexis’ video explaining the Pythagorean Theorem, one of the first math crash courses he posted on TikTok. The comments were filled with similar statements thanking the TikTok Tutor for the videos, others giving in requests for future videos.
Alexis has also posted some videos on YouTube and has an active Discord channel.
When asked by CBS2 why he bothers posting these videos since he is not getting paid for any of it, Alexis humbly responded, “The knowledge I have, I just want to share it [with] other people.”
