Kapuso talents reminisce precious times with their fathers

- By JOJO P. PANALIGAN

Father’s Day this 2020 will likely be among the more unforgettable ones for many people, mainly because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Suddenly, most dads are at home 24/7 and the memories made with their children, if only because of the constant togetherness, are worth treasuring.

asked some of the talents of GMA Artist Center (GMAAC) two questions about precious times with their fathers and here’s the revert:

What’s your favorite bonding time with dad?

Barbie Forteza: “Whenever he drives me to work, just the two of us. We get to talk about the most random things and we have the most fun in traffic.”

Michelle Dee: “My dad and I bond in a very spiritual and mindful way. If there’s anyone I can credit more for my ‘sanity’ throughout the rollercoaster ride of experiences these past few years, it would definitely be because of my dad and the kind of influence I had growing up together with my grandmother.”

“Yung everytime na magbabakasyon kami ng biglaan. Like on the day yung pagplano, walang na-book na hotel, ‘yung pahirapan ang gusto niya. May one time naisipan namin na mag-Vigan tapos holiday ‘yun. Ayun, wala kami nakuhang hotel kasi fully booked. So hanap kami ng hanap kung saan kami magstay and buti na lang may nahanap naman. Masaya rin siya kasi nga biglaan. Sabi nga niya, basta biglaan natutuloy.”

“Eating and watching movies and just hanging outside the house talking about random things. When I would go to Mindoro and just admire his plants and he would tell me what those are and their trivia and the like.”

“Midnight snacks and movie nights!! We get to share our thoughts after watching a movie and get to eat our favourite food!”

Thia Thomalla: “The random moments at the dining table when he is trying to be clingy or making fun of someone on the table.”

Jillian Ward: “Eating out with him, or when we’re about to pick up other family members while we’re jamming to music in the car, or when we go on dates to buy random stuff; going to bookstores, buying stuff for our house, car, etc.”

Kyle Ocampo: “Yung kulitan and kwentuhan po namin palagi ni daddy.”

“When we go on road trips and just talk about the history of the place, and also going out to eat at our favourite restaurant together! Every moment with my dad is my favourite.”

Myrtle Sarrosa: “When we’re in the car, talking. For as long as I can remember, my dad has always chosen to drive me and my brother everyday. From dropping me off to school, to going to events, meeting with friends or when I started working, my dad has always been a busy person but whenever there was something I wished to pursue or choose to do, my dad would always be the person to bring me there. This may be something so simple but I appreciate that in whatever choices I make, he’ll be there to bring me to places to pursue life on my own.”

! “Singing and swimming kasama lahat ng kapatid ko. Minsan na lang din kami makumpleto ng mga kapatid ko kaya every time we get the chance na magkita-kita ay sinusulit talaga namin!”

" #$ % “We always play video games. Parang ‘yun na ang naging bonding namin ni daddy – ever since.”

What’s the best advice you got from him?

Barbie: “The best advice I’ve ever gotten from him is to not give up on my goal. Slowly work my way to get it.”

Michelle: “It is a quote I live by that my dad wrote as a dedication to a book he passed down to me: ‘So let go and surrender to the flow of Love. Trust that all is unfolding to a higher plan and that as long as you are acting on Love – all will be taken care of.’”

“’Buhay mo yan, ikaw ang masusunod.’ Lagi niyang sinasabi na lahat ng nangyayari sa buhay ko, dahil ‘yun ‘yung hinayaan kong mangyari. So wala raw akong ibang sisihin sa mga nangyayari sa buhay ko kundi ako lang. May point din naman siya. Happy lang din ako kasi nandyan siya para i-guide kami.”

Arra: “Never stop dreaming. Always be the best version of yourself, that it’s okay to fall down. It’s the best way to learn about life. Never let other people pull you down.”

Brent: “Palagi niya sinasabi na ‘Family more than anything.’ Kasi at the end of the day, iwan ka man ng lahat, yung family mo hinding-hindi ka iiwan.”

Thia: “‘One word is enough for a wise man’ and this has always pressured me in a good way to make better and wiser decisions.”

“It’s okay to not be okay, but we shouldn’t stop there. We must keep going in order to learn and to grow.”

Kyle: “Be your best at all times and to always respect the elderly because you will be like them one day.”

“‘All I got to say is stay who you are and no matter what happens as a father I’m always here for you.’”

Myrtle: “My dad is a man of action. He shows his love not through words but through the everyday things he does for my mom, my brother and I. And I am who I am is because of his unconditional love. I have made many mistakes in life but time and again, my dad would always show me love despite feeling like a failure sometimes.

“My dad taught me how to drive the car for the first time in Iloilo. I remember getting off the road and damaging the car. I felt so sorry and didn’t want to drive again. But instead of getting mad at me, he told me not to feel bad because we all make mistakes. He didn’t blame me. If he did, maybe I would be too scared to ever drive again but, no, he continued to teach me until I learned.

“Since he drives a lot, I remember that he mentioned life is like driving a car. You must always have a destination to go. You can look at the rear view mirror but you must look at what’s ahead rather than focus on what’s already past you. You can have many paths to take. There will be short cuts or even longer ways, but even if you make wrong turns, as long as you continue to drive, you’ll get there.”

Ralph: “Be yourself and always be the best version of yourself. Stay humble kahit saan ka pa mapunta. Never ko ‘yun kinalimutan.“
