DPWH builds 3 flood control structures in Bataan

- By CHITO A. CHAVEZ

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed three flood control structures along the Pentor-Balsik, Pagalanggang, and Pita Rivers in Dinalupihan, Bataan, which it said, will protect local residents from heavy flooding during torrential rains.

In a report to DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, Regional Office 3 Director Roseller A. Tolentino said Barangays Daang Bago, Old San Jose, and Pita are “the recipient communities of protective structures built by the DPWH Bataan First District Engineering Office (DEO).’’

He said the 389-linear meter long, 5.66 high, 0.2-meter thick concrete slope protection on steel sheet pile was completed in Barangay Daang Bago as well as a channel excavation done along the section of the PentorBalsik River.

He added that the newly-constructed ₱49 million protective structure now safeguards residents living in the area while minimizing possible damage to crops and public structures nearby.

In Barangay Old San Jose, Tolentino said that a 209.44-linear-meter long and 6.17-meter high flood control structure along the right side of Pagalanggang River was built to protect low-lying residential and agricultural areas from the threat of flooding.

The ₱24.49-million Pagalanggang River Flood Control Structure in Barangay Old San Jose is also expected to protect the adjacent local road by preventing floodwaters from eroding or washing out road sections that can reduce the road’s load-carrying capacity.

Tolentino also noted that a 257.70-linear-meter concrete slope protection works along the left and right banks of the Pita River was also recently completed in Barangay Pita by the DPWH Bataan First DEO.

Built at a cost of ₱24.49 million, Tolentino said that the flood control structure now acts as a barrier against water overflow and possible erosion which in turn prevents the occurrence of flash floods that residents and farmers living near Pita River usually experience during extreme rainfall.
