Singles short of an album
Foo Fighters returns to the fray after coping with the massive loss of a key member. Just days after revealing their new drummer in Josh Freese, The Foos have now released the first single off their upcoming new album, their first record after Taylor Hawkins.
The new single, titled “Show Me How” does not come out rocking hard in typical Foo Fighter fashion. The mid-tempo number is instead a naturally guitar-centric driven affair that borders on atmospheric, shoegaze-tinged modern rock.
The life-changing events that took place in the band is evident as singer and head Foo Fighter Dave Grohl sings, “Where have you? / I walk in circles / back to square one / made it yesterday,” echoing pointedly to their dear friend and bandmate’s departure. Quite understandable as the loss, only more than a year ago, is still fresh in the minds of the Foos.
Also noticeable on “Show Me How” is the presence of a female voice singing with Dave almost all throughout. This dulcet toned singer is Grohl’s daughter Violet Grohl, who sings in perfect unison with her father “I’ll take care of everything from now,” as it eventually leads into the chorus of “Where are you now / who will show me how?” Violet made her big debut on the band’s big tribute concerts last year and it also makes sense to feature family on the new record, seeing as it’s the most important thing at this point in the Foo Fighters’ existence.
The band’s full-fledged return will come with the coming of a new album, titled “But Here We Are” scheduled for release this early June 2023.
Sarah Geronimo continues her single dump with the arrival of two new songs titled “Healing” and “My Mind.” On the former, SG takes a break from electro-imbued dance pop with this piano-decked ballad about recovery, and bouncing back from a soul-shattering hurt. Through this KZ Tandingan-composed song, Sarah Geronimo channels some very affecting emotions as she sings lyrics about “too many scars / …bruises on my heart / …and the many times I got my heart broken.” But “Healing” lifts as well as it eventually resolves that as long as her new love doesn’t “give up trying,” healing eventually comes. “Healing” is produced by Sarah Geronimo and veteran A&R Civ Fontanilla.
Meanwhile, “My Mind” is a return to R&B flavored dance pop as Sarah G collaborates with equally versatile singer-dancer-music artist Billy Crawford who co-writes on this track alongside recent and frequent SG songwriter Jin Chan. While the new album is still to be formally announced by Geronimo, she has released enough singles in just the past few months to fill up a new one and at this point is just a formality.
The Lo-fi sounds that permeate “Deja Vu” is the new offering from R&B, Hiphop artist Schumi (Albert Guallar). Schumi shares that “the feeling of pure ecstasy when you meet somebody you really want to be with” is at the heart of “Deja Vu.” Schumi adds the song is akin to “like you have met them way before because of how compatible you are to each other (at first meeting).” Deja vu indeed!
Melodic and catchy, R&B artist Daivjstn a.k.a. Justin Dave Pepito and collaborator, rap artist and singer Hey It's Je, lays down a pretty sounding tune in “Dahom.” A tune as sweetsounding as this is definitely an ode to the ladies, or more specifically, the ones that Daivjstn and Hey It's Je’s are singing this song to.
