A Silver EarthCheck Certification for Newport World Resorts
IT’S AN Earth Day celebration indeed for Newport World Resorts this year. The country’s premier lifestyle and tourism destination has recently earned its EarthCheck Silver Certification through its all-encompassing, fully-integ rated sustainability program dubbed I LOVE Earth (ILE). This milestone was achieved in just under 6 months since the Bronze Benchmarked status in November of last year.
Kingson Sian, Newport World Resorts’ president and chief executive officer proudly shares the milestone with every individual who has taken a stand for sustainability, “This certification is the end result of having completed a lengthy process that involved validating our long-standing sustainability efforts and comparing these to our industry’s top performers in the region. It is a true testament to our relentless commitment to environmental sustainability, responsible tourism, and the well-being of local communities as part of our larger advocacy to repurpose our world through sustainable living.”
EarthCheck is the world’s leading certification, consulting, and advisory group for sustainable destinations and tourism organizations. The rigorous and comprehensive certification process focuses on various key performance areas that cover environmental, social and cultural sustainability. Newport World Resorts is the first and only integrated resort in the country with the coveted EarthCheck badge, which covers the entire property including its gaming areas, the Newport Mall, the Newport Performing Arts Theater, Marriott Grand Ballroom, and its line of international hotel brands from Manila Marriott Hotel, Sheraton Manila Hotel, Hilton Manila,
Hotel Okura Manila, and Holiday Inn Express ManilaNewport City.
Stewart Moore, EarthCheck founder and chief executive, congratulated the whole ILE Council, composed of the hotel GMs and Newport World Resorts leaders with relevant expertise, on their achievement. “Newport World Resorts is a valued member of a global group of tourism operators who dare to make a difference.”
Launched in 2021 to consolidate and harmonize the sustainability programs of all hospitality brands in the property, the ILE program became the conduit for Newport World Resorts to revisit and reassess operations and make improvements where necessary. Through the EarthCheck’s certification board, the ILE Council was able to optimize and enhance ILE programs further to reach the next level of certification. From healthy, responsible and sustainable sourcing of ingredients to environment impact and energy efficiency measures and holistic transformations through teaching, training, and technology, the property’s entire ecosystem pitched in to create more environmentally-friendly operations.
ILE Council chairman, Marriott International Multiproperty vice president - Philippines and Marriott Manila general Mmanager Bruce Winton shares this achievement and win with the entire property, “Through the work of every individual that has taken the ILE commitment to heart, we have made major strides in integrating sustainability into our operations throughout the property. We have always worked with the belief that what gets measured gets done, and the Silver Certification validates these efforts and steers us towards the right direction.”
