7 interesting things about ‘Black Mass’

- Whitey: “…I do not consider this rattin’ or informing. This is business.” Connolly: “I couldn’t have said it any better. You’re a liaison. You pretty much do whatever you want, no one’s gonna raise an eyebrow…” The Lone Ranger, Transcendence Mortdecai.

T’S a fascinating piece of crime history taking place in Boston in the ‘70s and it’s got an impressive cast: Johnny Depp, Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton, Kevin Bacon, Peter Sarsgaard, Jesse Plemmons, Adam Scott, Corey Stoll. And it’s worth watching for that Johnny Depp fan who may be waiting for a new turn after and

Unfortunately no review from me as I am down with German measles, yet here is a list why this movie should be seen:

1. is one of those films where the big characters aren’t heroes or “good guys.” It is based on the 2001 non-fiction book,

by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill.

2. Not only is Johnny Depp’s character, Whitey Bulger, a far cry from what the actor looks like in real life (Johnny has fluffy dark hair and dark eyes; Whitey was balding and has blue eyes, for obvious starters), Whitey is a departure from the usual lovably odd, endearing and quirky Depp characters like Jack Sparrow, Ichabod Crane, Willy Wonka or Ed Wood.

In the words of director Scott Cooper, “Whitey could be charming, but he was also a man who, in the blink of an eye, would just as soon kill you as look at you. Johnny understood that Whitey Bulger is not a likable character for the most part; there’s a very vicious side to him, which you’ve never seen before from Johnny.”

3. Johnny Depp plays “emotional ping pong” with co- star Joel Edgerton (character actor du jour). According to Johnny Depp, “you could throw anything at him and he’d knock it back. When you can have that sort of emotional ping pong with another actor and you recognize in them that they’re strong enough to take it, that’s beautiful. There wasn’t one scene Joel and I did together that he didn’t try new things or find a different way to go. He surprised me every time.”

4. Depp says he and Cumberbatch “became like brothers.” Adds the man, “He’s a very giving actor and went above and beyond. You could see his heart, you could see him carrying that sense of loyalty and the love between Billy and Jimmy.”

5. The real US Attorney Fred Wyshak ( Corey Stoll’s character) was on the set on the first say of shooting.

6. Both Whitey and Billy Bulger are still alive. Whitey is currently in a penitentiary in Florida while Billy is a “and a grandfather of 33. Among others, he is currently board member of the Boston Public Library and Overseer Emeritus of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

7. Frank Costello, Jack Nicholson’s character in

is supposedly loosely based on Whitey Bulger—although the plot is an adaptation of HK’s

SHOWBIZ couple Tom Rodriguez and Carla Abellana returns to the big screen via Regal Entertainment’s latest romantic-comedy,

directed by Joey Reyes.

Ever a refreshing on- screen tandem, Tom and Carla first hit it off when they were paired in the GMA Network breakthrough series This was followed by the family- drama which sealed their romantic team- up on TV, while Regal gave them their first movie tandem in 2014.

This time, in Carla and Tom share another interesting tale of love filled with “hugot lines” from a girl who hopes to spend forever with her dream guy from high school.

Carla plays Karina who works as an executive assistant in a bridal shop. She has never been in a relationship because she remains in love with her high school crush, Carlo.

One day, their paths cross again at a wedding where Carlo is a photographer. They become close as they share a common interest in business. Carlo, however, is all about work, as Karina falls more and more in love with her high school crush.

Determined to win the man of her dreams once and for all, Karina does everything in her power to make Carlo feel the same way for her. Unfortunately, he is a tough nut to crack and Karina decides to give up the fight, and spare herself from pain and humiliation.

At this turning point, Carlo asks her to become his business partner, leaving Karina in a tight fix over accepting his proposal or ending any kind of connection with him. putting in all sorts of adlibs to make a narrative more interesting and fun for the whole family.

“Culturally, we aren’t the bedtime story kind of people; but in general, Pilipino, so that’s what we should do in story-telling. Read a book to children in a way that is lively and chatty, as we would in everyday conversations. You’ll see that your children will respond more to this type of story-telling, rather than the ‘Lola Basya’ setup where all you’ll ask them to do is listen.”

“Women in search of love can learn a thing or two from Karina,” smiled Carla at the movie’s press launch on Monday. “It’s a mustsee for women who have never been in a relationship but are still in search of love and someone to spend forever with.” Tom, asked if Carla, whom he has been dating exclusively for a year, is the one he hopes to spend forever with, replied, What you see is what you get. She’s very special to me, and I wouldn’t

waste my time if she’s not.” children are aplenty, and cost less than P100.

“It’s an inexpensive way to spend quality time with your children,” Teacher Dyali, who regularly holds story- telling workshops for parent groups, students of education both at Adarna and by appointment at schools, parties, and other events, rightly said.

Surprisingly, as discovered, it’s quite fun to do, and appreciated more by children, instead of the supposedly customary bedtime story.

If you need help on what to do, organize a mommy group and head over to Adarna for a session with Teacher Dyali. Not only will you make your kids happy by bringing books to life, but you’ll also find out that there’s a capable story-teller in you.
