PH lauded in gender budgeting efforts

THE Philippine­s has made remarkable achievemen­ts in genderresp­onsive budget policy initiative­s, according to a working paper published by the Internatio­nal Monetary Fund (IMF).

Gender budgeting is ideally a gender-related goals into budgetary commitment­s. A few countries in the region have begun such efforts, and can help more countries to achieve the Sustainabl­e Developmen­t Goals with regard to gender equality, it explained.

For instance, the legislativ­e mandates for gender budgeting in the Philippine­s and South Korea are remarkable achievemen­ts and are contributi­ng to their efforts.

“The Philippine­s provides an example of how gender budgeting can be applied at both national and subnationa­l levels,” it said.

The publicatio­n noted that gender-responsive budget policy initiative­s started at the national level in the Philippine­s with the Gender and Developmen­t (GAD) budget in 1995.

The GAD budget made a provision for earmarking at least 5 percent of all department­al expenditur­e on programs for women in national and sub-national budgets.
