DLSU’s Ayo gets onegame suspension

- The Manila Times JOSEF T. RAMOS

UNIVERSITY Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Commissioner Rene Andrei Saguisag said on Thursday that De La Salle University coach Aldin Ayo will be suspended for one game.

Ayo, who led Letran College to a National Collegiate Athletic Association 92 men’s basketball title last year before moving to La Salle, was ejected out of the game for confronting referee Eric Viray during the second quarter of La Salle’s game against University of the East.

During the argument, Ayo, 38, borrowed the eyeglasses of his assistant coach Siot Tangquincen and mockingly handed it to Viray.

“Based on the UAAP house rules, automatic one-game suspension will be implemented on any player or coach who will be ejected during a game,” Saguisag told

during a phone interview. “We are going to follow the rules but they can appeal the suspension.”

Despite the incident, the Green Archers still beat the Red Warriors to remain undefeated in six games.

“If ever they appeal, we will study the appeal. If ever we find merit in their appeal, we can reverse it. But if none, the suspension will stay. So far, we haven’t received any formal appeal yet so the suspension will stay,” Saguisag added.

Ayo’s one-game suspension will take effect Sunday during La Salle’s game against Ateneo De Manila University.

Ayo refused to comment on the issue.
