CDO boxers display prowess in Batang Pinoy
TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte: Cagayan De Oro (CDO) pugs dis played their pugilistic prowess by winning gold medals in boxing at the conclusion of the 2016 Batang Pinoy National Championships here.
Taking home the gold were light pinweight John Vincent Pangga, junior light flyweight Marco John Rementizo, as well as lady boxers Gina Casin (48kg), Marty Ann Laug (38kg) and Jolibeth Maglasang (40kg).
General Santos, meanwhile, bagged four gold medals courtesy of pinweight Criz Russu Laurente, light bantamweight RV Denega and their female teammates Angela Bianca Laurente (54kg) and Roxan Kapawan (57kg).
Davao City bet junior lightweight Junmilardo Ogayre, 17, who wants to follow the footsteps of former world boxing champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr., also won a gold medal.
“I like the way Donaire fights, his power and the timing,” Ogayre told reporters after winning by unanimous decision over Zamboanga del Sur’s Jerald Into using his heavy right hand.
“I want to fight for the national team someday, but my real dream is to become a professional like Donaire,’’ said Ogayre, who is sixth in a brood of eight.
The other gold medallists in boxing were Davao Del Sur’s junior fly- weight standout Reymark Alicaba, bantamweight Richard Bulacan and pinweight Jean Miguillan, paperweight Carl John Austria of Panabo City and Rodel Gamo of Bago City.
In sepak takraw, Michael Lisondra, Marvin Escamillan, Nonoy Jumar, Ricardo Goring and Jayford Edradan of Surigao Del Norte ruled the boys’ regu event after defeating Davao City in the finals. Mati City dominated the girls’ division.
In chess, Dasmariñas City’s Daniel Quizon topped the boys’ 12-under rapid event, his third gold medal after winning in the boys’ 12-under blitz and standard chess divisions earlier.
The 12-year old Quizon lost his seventh and final round game to Pasig City’s Mark Jay Bacojo but still emerged as the solo champion with six points ahead.
John Marvin Miciano of North Cotabato won the boys’ 13-17 rapid event with 2232 points – the highest garnered in the tournament. He has also won one silver medal each in blitz and standard events.
Living up to its reputation as the dancesport capital of the country, Cebu City dominated the competition held at Rotary Park Gym by bagging eight gold medals.
Lloyd Simon Asuque and Raylyn Jhea Romeo won two golds each in the standard junior C and Latin junior C events. Not to be outdone, Andrew Ysla and Noelyn Mie Pedrano duplicated the feat in the standard youth A and Latin youth A events.
Other gold medal winners were the pair of Jake Emmanuel Corro and Anndreah Kiem Capangpangan (Latin junior A), Gylle Diluvio and Julia Paz Branzuela (standard junior A), Jaydel Fresh Pat and Angel Therese Epe (Latin juvenile A) and Jim Jocson and Mitchloni Dinauanano (standard juvenile A).
As of press time, Cebu City has 41 gold, 25 silver, and 26 bronze medals to top the weeklong tournament. Baguio City has 37-18-26, Zamboanga 34-22-21, Davao City 27-41-55 and Dasmarinas City, Cavite 20-15-5.
Meanwhile, the gymnastics contest will be held at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila beginning today until December 11, while the wushu tilt will be staged at Philsports in Pasig City from Monday to Thursday.
