500k grant awaits top achievers in social design tilt
PREPARATIONS are underway for the launch of this year’s Benilde Prize 3.0, the first university-based competition dedicated to launching and mentoring the next wave of innovators.
The Hub of Innovation For Inclusion (HIFI) has partnered with colleges and universities around the country for a threeday workshop to familiarize its students on the principles of human- centered design, which act as the framework for the formulation and development of socially responsible projects.
Educational institutions that served as venues for the past endeavors were Lorma Colleges in San Juan, La Union; University of Luzon in Dagupan City; De La Salle University in Metro Manila; De La Salle Lipa in Batangas; University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City; University of San Carlos in Cebu City; Fr. Saturnino Urios University in Butuan City; and University of Immaculate Conception in Davao City. Over 500 students signed up for the seminars.
Launched in 2014 by De La Salle- College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB), the Benilde Prize has sought proposals that enable the Philippines to achieve some of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, namely: zero hunger; good health and well- being; quality education; clean water and sanitation; responsible consumption and The College of Saint Benilde has a direction on innovation that makes sure its students are infused with imagination and creativity production; action to combat climate change; conserving marine resources; and protecting and sustaining ecosystems on land.
Past installments of the competition have recognized two student-led enterprises intended to have an impact on the lives of Filipinos, both of which are presently undergoing development.
The pioneer Benilde Prize in 2015 was awarded to Silliman University’s Bamboard Game Project, which aimed to teach mathematics among school children in a fun and educational manner.
Ateneo de Naga University’s Dreamweavers, winners of the 2016 leg, proposed the establishment of an online job portal that would match K-12 graduates with future employers.
A half a million Philippine Peso will be sponsored, as well as trophies designed by renowned sculptor Ann Pamintuan, PowerMac products, and mentorship to interpret their ideas.
Although the prize is being hosted by DLS-CSB, the contest is open to all who are currently enrolled in local colleges and universities. Those who drew up the best proposals during the nationwide seminars have been encouraged to submit their entries to this year’s competition.
The Top 5 submissions will participate in a Boot Camp to be held in Manila before the finalists make their ultimate pitch to a select Board of Judges, who will proclaim the winner.
