San Beda blanks Mapua U

SAN Beda College showed its relentless offense anew as it thrashed Mapua University, 10-0, to stretch its lead in the National Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n (NCAA) Season 93 seniors football tournament on Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila. The Cardinals, on the other hand, remained winless in two matches.

San Beda pressed its attack early on but it was only midway the first half when Adolfo Abada sparked a scoring spree completing a series of passes with an easy tap.

Aljo Zabala scored via penalty kick in the 36th before Jerome Marzan, Jegger Alfuente and Mark Anthony Magtoto added one goal apiece for a massive 5- 0 lead at the break.

The booters from Mendiola insidious onslaught resulted in five more goals in the second half.

Magtoto scored just a minute past the restart while Zabala’s screamer sailed over the arms of goalkeeper Roland Avila in the 53rd.

James Eje quickly buried a brace before Magtoto finished the rout with a hat-trick off a well- placed cross by Nimrod Balabat in the 76th.

In the match day opener, EAC notched a bounce-back 1-0 win at the expense of Lyceum of the Philippine­s University.

Marvin Lianza netted the lone goal off a rebound in the 21st as the Generals rebounded from a huge loss to San Beda for their first maximum points in the season.

The Pirates, who’ve had the most of the scoring chances but went misfiring, opened their campaign on a losing note.

Meanwhile, second-running College of St. Benilde is battling listless University of Perpetual Help System DALTA at press time.
