Carlos reaches Asian Under-14 meet finals

PROMISING netter Maria Carmencita Isabela Carlos posted an easy 6-2, 6-2 victory over unheralded Jannat Kaur Anand of India to reach the finals of the 2017 Asian Under-14 Tennis Championsh­ip girls’ singles being held at the Lawn Tennis Associatio­n of Thailand Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

The 13-year old Carlos shoots for the crown when she faces fourth seed Soo Ha Jang of South Korea, who also scored an equally impressive 6-2, 6-0 win over Chutnaree Boonklang in the other semifinal game. It was Carlos’ fourth straight-set victory. Earlier, Carlos blasted Na Lim Kang of South Korea in the first round (6-1, 6-2), wild card Noelle Vivian Faber of Singapore in the second round (6-0, 6-0) and fifth seed Delilah Kuronen of Sweden in the quarterfin­als (6-0, 7-5).

It was a different story in the doubles event as Carlos and Chinese partner Zhang Yu Jie opted to withdraw because of the latter’s injury.

They were scheduled to play against Chinese duo Liu Pei Yi and Zi Ying Ruan in the semifinals of the tournament sanctioned by the In- ternationa­l Tennis Federation and Asian Tennis Federation.

In boys’ doubles, the third-seeded pair of Filipino Edgardo Manuel Angara and Malaysian Jared JiaSheng Leong suffered a 6-2, 2-6, 1113 decision to top picks Baher Miro of Syria and Seika Nishima of Japan in the semifinals.
