Carlos finishes 2nd in Asian Under-14 Tennis

INTERNATIO­NAL junior campaigner Maria Carmencita Isabela Carlos copped the runner-up honors in the 2017 Asian Under14 Tennis Championsh­ip girls’ singles held at the Lawn Tennis Associatio­n of Thailand Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

Carlos suffered a 1- 6, 1- 6 decision loss to fourth seed Soo Ha Jang of South Korea in the gold- medal match of the tournament sanctioned by the Asian Tennis Federation ( ATF).

“I wrapped up the 2017 tennis year as a runner- up in the Asian Tennis Federation tournament in Bangkok, Thailand. Not a bad finish, but I know I can do way better. Will be back next year, stronger and better,” Carlos posted on his Facebook account.

It was Carlos’ second straight runnerup trophy in singles after achieving the same feat in the 1st ATF 14-Under Series held in Kelana Jaya in Malaysia.

The 13-year old Carlos made it to the finals by toppling unheralded Jannat Kaur Anand of India in the Final Four, 6-2, 6-2.

She also defeated Na Lim Kang of South Korea in the first round ( 6- 1, 62), wild card Noelle Vivian Faber of Singapore in the second round ( 6- 0, 60) and fifth seed Delilah Kuronen of Sweden in the quarterfin­als ( 6- 0, 7- 5).

Carlos and Chinese partner Zhang Yu Jie reached the semifinals of the doubles play.

In the boys’ category, Edgardo Manuel Angara lost in the second round against top seed Chathurya Nilaweera of Sri Lanka (4-6, 2-6) in singles.

Angara and Malaysian Jared Jia-Sheng Leong were semifinali­sts in the doubles event.
