MANAGING MILLENNIALS – FINEX FILES
OUR principal asked me recently what difference I saw between managing today’s millennials and a similar group of individuals 20 years ago. I was asked this question because of my previous experience managing auto dealerships staffed by individuals of about the same age back then.
- cally want structure in their lives. hours with goals clearly stated and progress assessed on a regular basis. and receiving regular feedback. - tive attitude toward life and are are comfortable working with teams and are naturally imbued because of the richness of the social media scene that they grew up parents who have arranged their lives around them and they enjoy sharing their family stories.
One would argue that millennials have the most child-centric - need ever changing challenges concerned about work-life balance, a fun and employee-centered workplace.
same dreams and aspirations for a better life for themselves and the families they want to have in values for honesty, hard work and dedication as their Gen X coun for meaning in their lives want to represent, as well as the products and services that they offer.
I believe that if the millennials of today are motivated by the same dreams and aspirations as their Gen X counterparts of yesterday, then there is very little distinction in the way we manage them since their end-goals are about the same. We need to engage them in the same way by showing them congruence between the company objectives and their own personal goals. If the company succeeds, we all succeed.
Of course, there will be nuances. One has to remember that millennials grew up in the midst of a rich social media scene that allowed them to network globally and understand the world through the technologies that are now part of normal everyday life, enabling them to multi-task between smart phones, computers and the ever sets them apart, but at the same time, this vast understanding of technology and innovation also reinforces their sense of human same dreams and aspirations for the future that they share with their Gen X counterparts.
