Harry Liu, meanwhile, said the PSEi had taken its cue from Wall Street, where investors were anticipating strong earnings results and also downplaying the latest trade broadside from Washington.

“It’s purely technical,” Liu added, noting that “market has been a little bit oversold”.

The news from Washington, however, rattled markets elsewhere in Asia. Tokyo tumbled by 1.2 percent, Hong Kong lost 1.3 percent and Shanghai ended off 1.8 percent. Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, Taipei and Jakarta also ended lower.
