Harry Liu, meanwhile, said the PSEi had taken its cue from Wall Street, where investors were anticipati­ng strong earnings results and also downplayin­g the latest trade broadside from Washington.

“It’s purely technical,” Liu added, noting that “market has been a little bit oversold”.

The news from Washington, however, rattled markets elsewhere in Asia. Tokyo tumbled by 1.2 percent, Hong Kong lost 1.3 percent and Shanghai ended off 1.8 percent. Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, Taipei and Jakarta also ended lower.

In Manila, all sectoral results settled in the green, led by holding

Volume turnover remained thin, however, with just over 852 million issues valued at P5.16 billion traded

Winners led losers, 101 to 91, while 41 issues were unchanged.
