- CHRISTINE FABRO, TMTC INTERN

SIX cases of cellulitis or skin infection that can lead to flesh- eating disease have been recorded amng inmates and members of Manila Police District (MPD) Station 9 in Malate, according to a television report. An inmate was brought to the hospital on Wednesday morning because of high fever and an infection found on his right foot, an indication of cellulites, which was believed to be the cause of death of an inmate of MPD Station 9 on Sunday. Cellulitis is an skin infection caused by bacteria that enters through an open wound. It can be acquired by a wounded person who had direct contact with a swollen part of the skin of another person. “The sanitation program is regularly done in our cells. Before we bring them to the nearest hospital, we disinfect first the inmate,” Police Chief Insp. Cenon Vargas Jr., chief of investigation of MPD Station 9, admitted that the Station 9 jail is congested. National Capital Region (Metro Manila) Police Office chief and Police Supt. Guillermo Eleazar has asked for help from local government units as they are unable to properly attend to the medication needs of the inmates as a result of the congestion.
