ALSONS Power Group has commissioned a contractor for its 15-megawatt (MW) run-of-river hydroelectric power project in Sarangani, its first foray into renewable energy (RE).

Alsons Power said it recently signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with Sta. Clara International Corp. (SCIC) to build the hydro facility at the Siguil River basin in Maasim municipality.

SCIC is an EPC provider that serves the power and utilities, infrastructure, and civil engineering sectors.

The contract was signed by Alsons Power Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer Tirso Santillan Jr. and SCIC Chairman and Managing Director Nicandro Linao.

The P3.7-billion hydro power plant, expected to begin commercial operations in 2020, will supply electricity to Sarangani, General Santos City, and key municipalities of South Cotabato.

Alsons Power said the Siguil project is the initial rollout of their potential 200-MW hydro capacity which includes another project in Bago City, Negros Occidental.

The group operates three diesel power facilities, all in Mindanao: Southern Philippines Power Corp.’s (SPPC) 55-MW plant in Alabel, Sarangani; Western Mindanao Power Corp.’s ( WMPC) 100-MW plant in Zamboanga City; and the 103-MW Mapalad Power Corp. (MPC) plant in Iligan City.

By 2021, Alsons Power expects to have a generating capacity of at least 588 MW, equivalent to about 25 percent of Mindanao’s projected peak power demand for that year.
