Pope admits ‘shame and pain’ of Church abuse in Ireland

DUBLIN: Pope Francis said he shared in the “shame and pain” of the Catholic Church’s “failure” to deal with years of sexual abuse scandals as he began a historic two-day visit to Ireland on Saturday.

“The failure of ecclesiast­ical authoritie­s... to address these repellent crimes has rightly given rise to outrage and remains a source of pain and shame for the Catholic community. I myself share those sentiments,” he said, standing next to Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar.

Varadkar urged the Pope to ensure justice for abuse victims worldwide in a blistering criticism of the Church’s legacy in Ireland where Francis began a two- day visit on Saturday.

Varadkar, who is openly gay, also referred to Ireland’s reform of laws on divorce, same-sex marriage and abortion.

He called for “a new relationsh­ip between Church and state in Ireland — a new covenant for the 21st century.”
