More than 800,000 without water in Metro

- JORDEENE B. LAGARE

A TOTAL of 809,000 customers of Maynilad Water Services, Inc. will have minimal to no water supply until Tuesday because of water turbidity.

In a Facebook post, Maynilad said it was prompted to reduce its water production from its treatment plants due to the heavy rainfall caused by Typhoon “Ompong,” (international name: “Mangkhut”), which increased the turbidity of the raw water coming from Ipo Dam.

High turbidity indicates increased sediment concentration in the water.

Consumers from the cities of Caloocan, Las Piñas, Makati, Malabon, Marikina, Navotas, Quezon, Parañaque, Pasay, Valenzuela, as well as Mecauayan and Obando in Bulacan and Imus and Bacoor in Cavite are affected by the supply cut.

“Our water production will stay at reduced levels until rainfall over the Ipo watershed dissipates and the sediments in the raw water of Ipo Dam settle,” Maynilad said.

affected (as well as the duration of the service interruptions per area) will vary on a daily basis, depending on the level of turbidity in the raw water coming from Ipo Dam,” it added.

To mitigate the effects of the reduced production, Maynilad will continue to deploy mobile water tankers to deliver potable water to affected areas.

The west zone concessionaire is constantly monitoring the water quality in the dam even as it conducts system adjustments to optimize the limited supply.

Maynilad advised its consumers to expect some discoloration in their water supply once it resumes supplying water.

“Should this happen, just let

few seconds until the water clears

Prior to the announcement, some Maynilad customers experienced emergency service interruptions.

This was not the first time Maynilad was forced to cut its water supply for the same reason.

In August, about six million Maynilad customers had no water for several days because of the increased sedimentation stirred up by the southwest monsoon or “habagat.”
