Falcons eye to extend winning run

- JEREMIAH M. SEVILLA

ADAMSON University seeks to pull away farther from the pack when it collides with the dangerous University of Sto. Tomas ( UST) in Season 81 University Athletic Association of the Philippines ( UAAP) today at the Araneta Coliseum.

The leading Soaring Falcons will put their pristine 2-0 record on the line in their 2 p.m. encounter with the Growling Tigers.

Upbeat after a 74-70 shocker over reigning titlist Ateneo De Manila University at the start of its campaign, Adamson cruised to a second win—a 90-76 rout of University of the East (UE).

Veteran coach Franz Pumaren wants his Falcons to go all- out against the Tigers.

“They (UST) are confident after beating FEU. We don’t look at the current standings and the last game. Anybody could beat a particular team,” he added.

Pumaren is expected to rely on captain Sean Manganti, who posted a UAAP career-high 27 points in their latest win, along with Jerrick Ahanmisi and Cameroonian center Papi Sarr.

UST (1-1), on the other hand, is aiming to sustain the momentum from its 76-74 beating of Far Eastern University behind rookie guard Ken Zamora’s go-ahead layup.

Head coach Aldin Ayo who was emotional of Tigers’ breakthrough win vowed not to rest on their laurels.

Veteran cagers Renzo Subido and Marvin Lee along with the promising Zamora and CJ Cansino are tabbed to lead UST’s charge. The Tigers are looking to snap a two-season win drought against Adamson.

Meanwhile, Ateneo (1-1) guns for a streak when it battles National University (1-1) at 4 p.m.

The Blue Eagles are raring for a follow up for their 87-79 win over University of the Philippines in this season’s first “Battle of Katipunan” last September 12.

But the Bulldogs are keen to rebound from a 76-80 setback to De La Salle University just three days ago.
