Sharing business formulas for the future

- YUGEL LOSORATA

CLICHÉ as it sounds, the future of the Philippine business community is partly dependent on the young’s acknowledgement of age- old formula like, well, hard work.

That was the overarching message during the JFINEX Conference 2018 held at the Mall of Asia Arena on September 17. The gathering was aimed at urging future business and finance leaders to keep themselves equipped and technically ready for the big time. Various segments were discussed, with one importantly zeroing in on the millennials in corporate leadership.

FINEX Philippines President Marivic Espano said: “I think despite the generation gap, some tried-and-tested formula for business success would be there as people continue aspire for better living. The main difference of millennials from their older generation counterpart is the way they use technology. On that note, they communicate to people in a more direct way.”

The millennials segment implied that their era being centered on gadgets, the conventional route of going 9 to 5 can be tweaked to make the process more appropriate for the needs and wants of the yuppie workforce. The young, as it pointed out, should not be restless.

Noted speakers for this topic included the deputy chief operating officer of the Ayala Malls Group, Mariana Zobel De Ayala-Aboitiz, and executive vice president of Andok’s Litson Corporation, Maverick Javier.

The Junior Finex Committee ( JFINEX) is the vehicle of Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines (FINEX) to link university-level students to the value of learning business and finance. The conference is in line with the 50th founding anniversary of FINEX and JFINEX’s 20th year of existence.

“The conference wanted to promote and support the education of future leaders in finance and business,” Espano said. “We want them to hear and understand the views, insights, and experiences of those already-leaders in the field. By so doing they learn outside of the common classroom setup.”

Other segments tackled during the conference aimed at enhancing the knowledge of student participants were “Journey of a CFO (Chief Financial Officer),” “Inspiration of the Future,” “Government for the Youth,” and “From Showbiz to my OwnBiz” which featured actor Enchong Dee.

The Philippine government itself acknowledges the contributions of financial executives through an executive order.

The lady executive added: “Students can relate most to people their age as they pursue the idea of becoming their own bosses. Even if the young people are in constant search for doing things differently, the important thing is their continuous improvement of themselves.”

FINEX, with more than 700 members and counting, has continuously given their pool the latest in concepts, programs, and policies of business management and finance through its various services.

Keynote speakers at the first JFINEX Conference were Manila Archbishop Luis Cardinal Tagle and BDO Unibank Chairman Teresita Sy- Coson. Other notable figures who did gave interesting talks were Go Negosyo founder Joey Concepcion and Assistant Majority House Leader Michael Romero.

“Always they have to appreciate the magic formula of being hardworking,” Espano reminded people in business, regardless of age.
