Canon changes videography not just photography

- DERIQ BERNARD

N The depth of perspective at Canon’s recent launch of its new EOS R and the complementary lenses developed for this new body, plus the innovative RF mount makes thesis projects. At the College of Mass Communications in University of the Philippines Diliman, the de facto shooting device is a Canon (any of the later EOS series cameras the choice, with mirror-less already the norm).

Thus, when I stepped into the Canon launch at the Shooting Gallery in that part of Makati where photography, videography and advertising agencies blossomed, I was immediately overwhelmed by the number of lenses and the vast capability of the new Canon line-up.

At over P214,000 for the new EOS R kit but only P147,988 for the body, it will be out of reach for most photographers save those with truly deep pockets. The likes of landscape photographer Edwin Martinez, fashion photographer Pat Dy and advertising and editorial lensman Wesley Villarica, who are all fellow brand ambassadors for Canon.

Now price aside, the camera, from what I saw at the launch is worth every centavo and more. With the digital world moving away from the now slow reaction of even the faster mirrored camera, the new imaging system at the heart of the EOS R delivers an optical excellence and speed I have not experienced both from the photography perspective and as a videographer

Let’s digress a little here and look at the Canon from an app perspective before I go back to the fascination bodyand-lens system.

Canon Camera Connect is a proprietary app that connects iOS and Android mobile devices to any Wi-Fi-equipped Canon camera, the EOS line of course, included. But the app can also work on the PowerShot or the video-only camera. Camera Connect makes it easy to see what your camera has captured, transfer photos and videos to your mobile device, and use your device to control your camera. It also allows to connect into various Canon services like Irista, which is a Cloud service; Lifecake, which is a service exclusively for families and hdbook, a photobook creation and printing service, which is not available in the Philippines.

Now that I’ve hurdled that app discussion, which is the point of my column, I go back to the EOS R.

Canon Philippines big boss of Consumer Imaging and Information division Benny Yu said it was delighted at the new camera and lenses which is “the future of photography.”

“The addition of the new EOS R to the continuing Canon EOS System not only photography and videography, it revolutionizes it,” Yu said in a press statement.

The Canon EOS R is the - sor, digital, mirrorless camera with an interchangeable RF mount lens system and its spectacular Electronic View is not a chest beating state- ment, because based on the it is true, if that whole sentence is taken in complete. The EVF alone is a powerful upgrade from Canon’s previous EOS bodies and the competitors’

The RF mount is a stroke of genius, solving the problem of using old Canon lenses to the new camera — even the oldest Canon will work with the RF mount compensating on three key points: enhanced image stabilization, rapid image optimization and for lenses that allow it, incredibly fast Auto Focus. Canon explained that the shorter RF lens mount will allow them to design better or smaller lenses than they can for the existing EF mount, which also means that the difference between the distance of the sensor and the lens is managed better.

Light filtration used to be done by light polarizing caps, which is now integrated nicely into the lens mount.

It’s built around the same 30 megapixel Dual- Pixel CMOS sensor as the EOS 5D Mark IV. Canon insists this is an all-new sensor that detects and pursues light at 30.3 megapixels. But that can only be proven by picking up the camera and taking actual photos or for my purposes, videos.

Fortunately, it was the “Crusaders of Light,” Dy, Martinez and Villarica who did all of this work for us to show the capabilities of this new camera.

- era, it’s not surprising that the EOS R occupies a unique new position in Canon’s lineup. What you’re getting is more than the image and video quality from the 5D Mark IV at around the price point of the 6D Mark II as some amateur “professional” photographers were commenting the camera during the event.

Why? The EOS-R shares the same resolution ( 30.3MP effective pixels on the EOS R, 30.4MP on the 5D IV), but the sensor on EOS R is an updated version that has an ISO sensitivity going up to ISO 102,400 at the upper end, with ISO 50 at the lowest point.

the EOS R uses the latest Digic 8, whereas the 5D IV has the older Digic 6+. Plus it also uses a more powerful connectivity between lens and camera provid a single switch that sets ISO and other functions.

And as a last point of comparison — the 4K video recording. The EOS R does Ultra HD (3840×2160) and gives a choice between IPB and All-intra compression, that goes up to 480Mbps with 30fps with high bit rates. It can record at 60fps, or 120fps in 720p to record at a really clean 10-bit 4:2:2 video via the HDMI output.

There is no choice or comparison between the cameras, not even a price comparison. The amateur choice becomes obvious when there is no resource to procure the better option.
