- NEIL A. ALCOBER

THE Department of Education ( DepEd) on Saturday said public school teachers and nonteaching personnel nationwide will receive a P3,000 anniversary bonus in December.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones made the announcement during the World Teachers’ Day celebration in Ormoc City on October 5, and was reaffirmed in a meeting between the members of the DepEd’s Executive Committee and the Alliance of Concerned Teachers ( ACT)- Philippines at SEAMEO INNOTECH, Quezon City on October 26.

“We’re working on it, and preparing for it. Before December, we’ll make sure that it is already downloaded and available on or before the DepEd’s anniversary,” Undersecretary Annalyn Sevilla said.

Based on the recommendation of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, the DepEd adopted Dec. 20, 1863 as its foundation date considering its predecessors, the oldest of which being the Comision Superior de Instruccion Primaria.

The DepEd also restated its commitment to increase the teachers’ chalk allowance, and to lobby the Department of Budget and Management and the Civil Service Commission for the creation of non- teaching positions that will handle ancillary tasks in response to the issue on teachers’ workload.

The Education department also said it would ask the Government Service Insurance System to reconsider the deadline set for member- borrowers with past due loans to update their accounts, with automatic waiver of penalties and surcharges.
