La Salle faces UST in PFFWL

- JEREMIAH M. SEVILLA

DE La Salle University seeks to defend its title against familiar rival University of Sto. Tomas (UST) in the 2018 Philippine Football Federation Women’s League (PFFWL) today at the PFF National Training Center Artificial Turf Pitch in Carmona, Cavite.

The Lady Green Booters and the Lady Golden Booters clash in the final fixture of the second season at 2:30 p.m.

La Salle leads the league with an unbeaten record of seven wins and a draw for 22 points, just one marker ahead of UST that holds a slate of seven victories against a loss.

The Taft-based female footballers swept the 13- game league to snare the championship last inaugural season.

The lady booters from Taft only need a stalemate to extend their reign based on the single-round format employed by the league this year.

La Salle won back-to-back titles in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) at the expense of the Lady Golden Booters.

The female booters from España, however, are determined to even the score.

In the previous UAAP season, UST beat La Salle twice in the elimination round (1-0 and 5-2) but surrendered a 1-2 decision in the final.

Both teams will miss the services of their star players, who are playing for the country in the ongoing first round of the 2020 Olympics Asian qualifiers in Tajikistan.

La Salle, under head coach Hans-Peter Smit, will play sans reigning MVP Sara Castañeda, midfielder Irish Navaja and striker Alisha Del Campo.

On the other hand, UST has to find a way to make up for the absence of its mentor Aging Rubio, who was commissioned as the Malditas’ trainer, along with striker Shela Mae Cadag, midfielders Charisa Lemoran and Hazel Lustan, defender Ivy Lopez and goalkeeper Nicole Reyes.

In the other matches, Far Eastern University and Tuloy FC battle for the third place at 8 a.m. while OutKast FC and Hiraya FC vie for a possible fifth place finish at 10: 30 a. m.
