C&E Publishing’s commitment: Providing adaptive solutions for Philippine education in the Fourth Industrial Revolution

- By Janice Roman and C&E Educational Solutions Group www.cepublishing.com

INDUSTRY 3.0 paved the way for the digitization and computerization of traditional devices and technology, but rapid developments and innovations that exist unceasingly explain the nature of the next level of the industrial revolution — also known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Industry 4.0 or simply, IR 4.0. Industry 4.0 describes the exponential changes to the way humans live, work, and relate to one another due to the existing cyber- physical systems, the interconnection via the internet, and the connectivity between data systems. Smart technologies connect and interact, visualize the entire production chain, and make decisions autonomously.

Industry 4.0 produces a more intelligent technology because of the collaboration of both humans and machines in one system, where technology performs independently. Meanwhile, the interconnection between human work and rapid technological movement during Industry 4.0 impacts all disciplines, industries, and economies in every country by creating massive and rapid changes in data gathering in a non-linear way at unprecedented speed across all sectors of society.

The World Economic Forum considers the following qualifications to be of high demand in the future workforce by the year 2022: analytical thinking and innovation; active learning and learning strategies; creativity, originality and initiative; technology design and programming; critical thinking and analysis; complex problem-solving; leadership and social influence; emotional intelligence; reasoning, problem-solving and ideation; and systems analysis and evaluation. In the succeeding years, industries will need to align their skills set and workforce strategy to these qualifications to withstand the demands of future employment in the existence of IR 4.0.

The wave of Industry 4.0 is so powerful that it provokes inevitable changes, even within the education landscape. The Fourth Industrial Revolution bears a generation of digital natives who are born in the age of the internet and digital technology. They bore witness to human work and technology as working in collaboration. While we can derive a good number of advantages in this collaboration, the interconnection of human work and technology also poses challenges in the education system because the traditional approach to teaching and learning is no longer fit. From these challenges emerge the need for innovation in the field of education, thus the name Education 4.0.

As the Fourth Industrial Revolution enables learning at one’s convenience, Education 4.0 is the industry’s proactive response to the requirements of the new industrial revolution. Education 4.0 promotes a new form of curriculum integration and knowledge production called the “Transdisciplinary Approach.” This approach links concepts with immersive learning in the context of real- world conflicts or themes. Students are prepared to solve real- world problems, in which the exploration of solutions integrates the perspectives of multiple disciplines and the utilization of new technology. When students explore solutions, students develop a multifaceted understanding of themselves, their environment, and society — which then produces new knowledge for the learners.

While the transdisciplinary approach to teaching and knowledge acquisition engages students to think deeper and participate actively in solving real-world problems, the dilemma remains as to how prepared the Philippine Education is in adapting to this approach of curriculum integration. C&E Publishing Educational Solutions Group, with the alternate name C&E Publishing Inc., consistently explores the underlying opportunities to address the challenges for the Philippine education sector in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
