Sogetsu Ikebana Manila mounts flower focus exhibit

PILIPINAS SHELL’S long- standing tradition of seeking and cultivati n g the nex t generation of artists continues.

The 52nd National Students Art Competitio­n ( NSAC) is now accepting entries that embody the theme “Imagine Nation.”

The energ y c omp a ny i nv i t e s young artists to follow in the footsteps of Filipino art masters the likes of BenCab, Jose Joya and Ang Kiukok – all of whom had showcased their own vision of art during their heydays with the NSAC.

For this year’s competitio­n, Pilipinas Shell aims to ignite the power of the youth’s imaginatio­n so they can share their vision of a progressiv­e Philippine­s.

“In a time when solidarity, integrity, and a sense of community are being challenged, we want this year’s NSAC to contain the ideas and desires of the youth when it comes to their vision of the nation’s future,” Pilipinas Shell country social performanc­e and social investment manager Sankie Simbulan said.

“We want them to use art to inspire others and show that change is still possible for a better Philippine­s,” she added.

Pilipinas Shell’s NSAC is open to all college students currently enrolled in Philippine schools for the year 2018- 2019. Participan­ts can submit a maximum of two entries using any of the following mediums: oil/acrylic, watercolor, sculpture, and digital fine arts ( print).

Grand prize winners across all categories wi l l each be awarde d a P6 0,0 0 0 c a sh pr i z e , wh i le the second and thi rd pr ize winn e r s w i l l r e c e i v e P4 0 , 0 0 0 and P30,000 respective­ly.

Metro Manila- based applicants can submit their entries on October 3, 4, and 5 while submission of provincial entries closed on September 20.

For more details, visit Pilipinas Shell’s off icial website www. shell. com. ph/shell_ art FLOWERS take the center stage in the 30th annual Sogetsu Ikebana Manila Branch exhibit that culminates today at the Atrium of Uptown Bonifacio corner 36th Street and 9th Avenue, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City.

Titled “Flower Focus,” the exhibit featurea eight different kinds of flowers, with the exhibitor’s flower of choice featured in his/her own flower arrangemen­t.

Open to the public during mall hours, Sogetsu Ikebana teachers conducted demonstrat­ion on the second day of the exhibit.

The Sogetsu School of Ikebana was founded by Sofu Teshigahar­a in 1927. He introduced the Modern or the Avant Garde style of Ikebana by allowing the arranger more freedom of expression and incorporat­ing the use of unconventi­onal materials in the arrangemen­t.

All these Teshigahar­a taught while emphasizin­g the need to conform with the basic rules of shape, line and form necessary in an Ikebana Arrangemen­t.
