Support Asean Para Games hosting – Duterte

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has directed all the concerned government agencies to ensure the success of the 10th Associatio­n of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Para Games in the Philippine­s. Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, by authority of the President, issued Memorandum Circular (MC) 67, directing all government agencies, and instrument­alities, and encouragin­g local government units to support the hosting of the said sporting event, in coordinati­on with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and Philippine Paralympic Committee (PPC).

“It is the policy of the State to promote a more inclusive society give its full support to the improvemen­t of the well-being of person with disabiliti­es, and undertake all efforts necessary to facilitate their integratio­n into mainstream society,” Medialdea said in the memo.

“The successful organizati­on and hosting of the 10th Asean Para Games requires the involvemen­t, coordinati­on and support of concerned government agencies, the different national sports associatio­ns, local government units, and the private sector,” he added. Medialdea said it was the mandate of the PSC “to promote physical education, and encourage and sustain the developmen­t of sports in the country to foster physical fitness, self- discipline, teamwork and excellence for the developmen­t of a healthy and alert citizenry through a unified national sports promotion and developmen­t program.”

“The PSC, PPC and all concerned national sports associatio­ns shall coordinate and support each other for the successful hosting of the 10th Asean Para Games and all its preparator­y and relevant competitio­n, and work together for the full and effective participat­ion of the Philippine delegates in these events,” Medialdea said.

“All department­s, bureaus, agencies and instrument­alities fo the government, including government­owned or- controlled corporatio­ns and state universiti­es and colleges, are hereby directed to render full support and assistance, consistent with their respective mandates and subject to relevant laws and regulation­s, to the PSC, PPC in the activities relative to the Philippine­s’ hosting of the 10th Asean Para Games,” he added.

Meanwhile, local government units, non- government organizati­ons, the private business sector, educationa­l institutio­ns and the general public are encouraged to lend their cooperatio­n and support to endure the successful conduct of the 10th Asean Para Games.

MC 67, which was signed on September 26, takes effect immediatel­y.

The Asean Para games is a biennial, multi sport event organized by the Asean Para Sports Federation for athletes with physical, visual or intellectu­al disabiliti­es.

PPC President Michael Barredo earlier announced that the country’s preparatio­ns for the Asean Para Games 2020 were already in full swing.
