THE Philippine Historical Association ( PHA) is calling for the restoration of Philippine History in the K to 12 Program.

In a statement posted on Facebook on September 22, the PHA, whose boards consist of teachers, academics, superintendents and students, stated that the subject was brought down to Grade 5, rather than Grade 7, per Republic Act 10533 or the “Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013.”

Similarly, the Department of Education’s ( DepEd) Order 20, series of 2014, removed the instruction of Philippine History has been removed from the curriculum of junior and senior high school.

“The exposure, therefore, of the student on the subject is too early and too distant from the student’s next exposure, which takes place in tertiary education, when Philippine History becomes part of the General Education Curriculum in college,” its statement wrote.

the time gap in teaching Philippine history may also result in confusion and even misinterpretation of our past.”

In addition, a revised online petition posted on Change. org on September 14 from concerned teachers of AralingPanlipunan ( Social Studies) and students, addressed to Education Secretary Leonor Briones, National Commission for Culture and the Arts Chairman Virgilio Almario, National Historical Commission of the Philippines Chairman Dr. Rene Escalante, House Committee on Basic Education and Culture Chairman Rep. Roman Romulo and Senate Committee on Education, Arts and Culture Chairman Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian, garnered 30,000 signatures so far.

“Its removal from the secondary education level obstructs the cohesion of study on Philippine History in basic education,” the petition’s statement wrote. “We humbly ask the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts to request the DepEd to review its policy of removing Philippine History as a dedicated subject in the secondary level of basic education and return it as a reinvigorated discipline.”

According to the petition, for Grade 5 students, they have Basic Philippine History 1, while Grade 6 students will get a grasp of the postwar history of the Philippines, under the subject Contemporary Philippine History. For junior high school, Grade 10 students are proposed to have the subject “Intermediate Philippine History: Contemporary Philippine History and Contemporary Issues” and for grade 12 senior high school students, they are proposed to have a core research and survey subject called “Special Topics in Philippine History,” which could even tackle the West Philippine ( South China) Sea dispute.

“With that, we are strongly seeking the return of at least only one dedicated Philippine History subject for each tranche of high school: one for JHS (junior high school) and one for SHS,” the petition stated.

Prior to the implementation of DepEd Order 20, Philippine History was taught to first year high school students.
