SAN BEDA EYES SWEEP VS LYCEUM

- JEREMIAH M. SEVILLA

SAN Beda University goes for a sweep but Lyceum of the Philippines University aims to prevent it, as the two powerhouse teams collide in Season 95 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) seniors basketball tournament today at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

The three- time champions Red Lions ( 17- 0) and the two- time runners- up Pirates ( 13- 4) renew their rivalry at 4 p. m.

San Beda moved a win away from a sweep of the 18- game eliminations after thrashing College of St. Benilde, 95-73, last week.

Veteran coach Boyet Fernandez is urging his Lions to display their patented solid defense.

“We’re winning because of our defense. LPU is a very strong team. We’re excited to face Lyceum and make that game a very exciting one,” said Fernandez.

MVP frontrunner Calvin Oftana will lead the four- peat seeking San Beda along with Cameroonian center Donald Tankoua and sophomore guard James Kwekuteye.

Lyceum, however, is eager to force a semifinal format and utilize its twice-to-beat advantage.

The Pirates locked the second seed with a crucial bounce-back 77-64 victory over Jose University heading to their clash versus the Lions.

“It’s going to be big for us as we get to the homestretch of the season. Every opportunity to learn and grow will be big for us,” said Lyceum mentor Topex Robinson.

Veteran guard Jaycee Marcelino, Cameroonian big man Mike Nzeusseu and heady guard Reymar Caduyac will anchor the Pirates’ assault.

San Beda crushed Lyceum, 88-73, in their first round encounter.

In the first game at 2 p.m., third seed Colegio de San Juan de Letran seeks to sustain its momentum heading to the Final Four as it battles also-ran Emilio Aguinaldo College.

The Knights ( 11- 6) gun for a third straight win to close the eliminations while the cellar- dwelling Generals ( 4- 13) try to end their campaign on a bright note.
