PH kickboxers snag five medals in SEAG debut

THE Philippine kickboxing team delivered five medals in the 30th Southe a s t Asian Games at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

Keeping true to their promise, Filipino kickboxers Jerry Olsim claimed the gold medal while 2017 Summer World University Games silver medallist Jomar Balangui and Raquel Daquel earned silver medals in their respective weight classes.

Benguet pride Olsim was the first to rock the dome after besting the competitio­n against Klinming Sarayut of Thailand for the men’s –69 kg. kick light category.

Dacquel lost to Nguyen Thi Hang Nga of Vietnam, 1-2, in the women’s –48 kg. full contact while Balangui bowed to Phan Ba Hoi of Vietnam, 1-2, in the men’s –54 kg. low kick.

On the other hand, Gina Iniong outclassed Api Mingkwan of Thailand, 3-0, to claim the top honors in the women’s light –55 kg. class.

nBenguet pride Jean Claude Saclag, for his part, is already assured of a silver in the men’s -63kg. low kick event.

His final bout was scheduled on Tuesday night.

(SKP) president Senator Francis Tolentino lauded the athletes for delivering a good fight.

Despite the challenges faced by the players, the lawmaker said they fought fair and fiercely.
