Bangko Sentral chief shares recovery outlook at TMT forum

- ANNA LEAH E. GONZALES

THE country’s top economic managers will take a look at potential business opportunities that could help bring the economy back on track after it took a beating from the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

The economy is projected to shrink by 2.0 to 3.4 percent this year with the Covid crisis already leaving a P2.0-trillion dent in the gross domestic product.

To help the government and the private sector get a clearer understanding of the economic landscape under the “new normal,” The Manila Times will host another virtual forum today, June 29.

The “Road to Recovery: Turning Crisis into Opportunities” is The Times’ second virtual forum since the imposition of the community quarantine.

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Benjamin Diokno will be the guest speaker.

Broadcast live on The Manila Times’

Facebook page, YouTube channel and The Manila Times TV from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., the forum will be moderated by

The Manila Times President and Chief Executive Officer Dante “Klink” Ang 2nd and business columnist Ben Kritz. “For several years now, The Manila

Times has been active in organizing business fora that feature guests who tackle national issues and relevant topics. The pandemic has pushed these fora from hotel ballrooms onto a virtual platform,” said Ang.

“We believe that these events are part of our work to deliver newsworthy content to our readers. In this case, we have arranged for our audience to hear directly from the source,” he added.

Ang said he expects Diokno to discuss the

initiatives of the central bank in addressing the impact of the pandemic to the economy.

“Like everyone else, we hope to hear Governor Diokno’s economic outlook. Earlier this year, he was also the keynote speaker at another business forum of

The Manila Times,” he added.

“But that was before the lockdown. So much has changed since then. Also, we hope to hear more about the monetary policy measures taken to address the economic impact of the pandemic,” Ang continued.

Diokno will be joined by Bank of the

Philippine Islands (BPI) lead economist Emilio Neri Jr., who will serve as reactor.

Eduardo Francisco, president of BDO Capital and Investment Corp. and PayMaya Philippines Chief Operating Officer Paolo Azzola will also talk about having the needed mindset in this time of pandemic.

Co presenters include BDO, San Miguel Corp., BPI and BPI Philam. Sponsors of the forum include SM Investments Corp. and its special partners Cagayan Economic Zone Authority, Entrego, Maybank and PayMaya.
