DIGGING DEEPER INTO HEALING WITH DENISE ROCO-DE LEON

- CARLA BIANCA RAVANES-HIGHAM

Iq’s been said that when times get tough, you have to learn to look inward. qhrough the years, I have heard various versions of this and always believed it to be true. When challenges arise, the easiest way to get out of it is by blaming our circumstances and those around us but real courage seeks to look within and see the many ways we can heal ourselves, something that nobody can do for us.

For years, Denise Roco- de Leon aided people in their healing — first through her words as a senior writer for PeopleAsia and recently, as a Certified Yin, Laughter, Hatha, and Kundalini Yoga Teacher. She also received certification in Basic and Advanced Sound Healing with Tibetan Bowls from Nepalese qeacher, swami Chaitanya Krishna of Golden Temple Singing Bowls.

qhe road to this path was one that merely fell into her lap, literally, “After my stint with PeopleAsia magazine, I worked for Rustan’s Commercial Corporation as an Events and PR Officer before resigning. After I my resignation, I immediately got stage 2 Dengue and while recuperating, a Dorling Kindersley book on Kundalini Yoga by shakta Kaur Khalsa fell on my lap.”

qhis then led her to a path of assisting people in their own healing journey.

When asked how sound healing helps, she notes, “sound Healing is a very broad field, and you can simply tune in to Binaural Beats, or Solfeggio Frequencies as can be found in Gregorian chanting, and even in sanskrit chanting.”

Denise said she utilizes the vibrations of the gong, a sacred instrument for sound healing and relaxation, as well as the qibetan Singing Bowls whose frequencies balance the body’s energies.

“qhe gong is likened to the ‘Voice of God’ — powerful, beautiful, encompassing, unyielding, gentle and strong at the same time. qhe vibrations you receive from a live Gong Bath, reverberates and changes the motion of cells in your body. It is stabilized. With the Tibetan Bowls, the metals used in making the bowls are an amalgamation of seven precious metals said to correspond to the energies of the sun, Moon, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Uranus, and Mercury. And also, each bowl corresponds to a tone or frequency that activates each of the seven main chakras.”

Meanwhile, Kundalini Yoga, or the Yoga of Awareness, is a dynamic, powerful tool that safely raises and utilizes the dormant energy that sits at the base of the spine.

“This technique precisely and consciously combines breath, mudra, eyefocus, mantra, body locks, meditation and postures that form a kriya (set of exercises as mentioned) to balance the glandular system, strengthen the nervous system, expand lung capacity, and purify the blood. It brings balance to the body, mind, and soul.

“When we apply the technology of Kundalini Yoga, it has the effect of uplifting the spirit. It is for everyone. It is universal and nondenominational. Meditation as a part of Kundalini helps calm the f luctuations of the mind, after going through the active physicality of kriya, we process another deeper aspect of ourselves through meditation.”

qhe mother of one also notes that while healing is incredibly important during this season, we must remember one important thing.

“We have to respect that we are all on different journeys. You can’t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped, in the same way you also can’t heal someone who doesn’t want to be healed.”

Even in her line of work, Denise is quick to say that this is true of her own journey.

“My healing journey is a constant one. Knowing is different from understanding. qhe more you know, the more potential to learn, and the more you learn, the more you should improve yourself. selfimprovement naturally ought to lead to self-healing. qhe path presented itself, actually. I just had to learn to stop running, and instead enjoy walking through it.”

In ending, Denise reminds that there are so many ways to heal.

“Gratitude is a great way to start — being constantly thankful through the vicissitudes of life make things ten times easier. Another way is to choose how long and intensely you want to focus on certain thoughts and emotions — ‘where attention goes, energy flows.’ Choose wisely.

“As Joe Jackson sings, ‘You can’t get what you want, ‘til you know what you want.’ Are you in for a random joyride or would you like to take the driver’s seat? Contemplate, reflect, think. Write down your goals and dreams. Map out concrete plans for the top three goals. If that’s too much, then just the one at the top of your list. Focus, have faith and manifest it. Healing is a lifelong journey for all of us.”
